This study uses snowpack measurements and dated lake sediment cores to investigate deposition of contaminants (including polycyclic aromatic compounds and numerous inorganic and organic contaminants such as mercury) to the landscapes and water bodies of the Athabasca Oil Sands region. The study is part of a technical report series conducted as part of the Joint Canada-Alberta Oil Sands Monitoring program.

This study investigates key issues identified in the Joint Canada-Alberta Oil Sands Monitoring program regarding water quality of the Lower Athabasca River mainstem and the downstream Peace-Athabasca delta, specifically: the current state of water quality; the distribution of contaminants in surface water; and whether substances added to the rivers by natural and man-made discharges are likely to cause deterioration of water quality.

Description

In August 2016, the first confirmed occurrence of whirling disease in Canada was found in fish from Johnson Lake in Banff National Park and the Bow River Basin. While the disease has no impact on human health, it can severely impact some salmonid fish populations. Alberta Environment and Parks is committed to implementing management strategies to reduce the risk to susceptible fish populations. As a part of this commitment, the Whirling Disease Innovative Research and Learning (WhIRL) Grant Program was created to support research initiatives that will provide novel information on whirling disease in Alberta. A total of $1,000,000 will be allocated in 2018-19 to fund research proposals. This application package provides more information on program eligibility, grant availability, and reporting requirements, and includes the application form.

Results from the Joint Oil Sands Monitoring plan presented here address the need to develop a comprehensive and robust invertebrate biomonitoring program for oil sands development in the lower Athabasca River and area. Benthic macroinvertebrate biomonitoring was conducted along the main stem of the lower Athabasca River, its primary tributaries and in the Peace-Athabasca delta to assess spatial and temporal change in ecological condition within these aquatic habitats. The study focused on macroinvertebrates because they are relatively sedentary, can be sensitive to multiple stressors, are critical components of fish habitat, and are the most common group used for aquatic bioassessments globally.
