The Kazan Upland natural subregion occurs in the far northeastern corner of Alberta and occupies about 1.5 per cent of the province. The main area lies north of Lake Athabasca. Approximately 60 per cent of the landscape of the subregion is exposed precambrian bedrock. This guide presents information on 34 community types found in the subregion. The dominant plant species, canopy cover, soil and environmental conditions are outlined for each type.

The province of Alberta is covered by a broad spectrum of vegetation regions and have been classified into 6 natural regions and 21 subregions for the province (Natural Regions and Subregions of Alberta 2006). Each of the regions consists of groups of plant communities which are influenced by environmental conditions and human impacts. This guide represents the preliminary analysis of 129 plots described in the Athabasca Plain subregion. The 129 plots represent 36 plant community types. The dominant plant species, canopy cover, soil and environmental conditions are outlined for each plant community type.

The Dry and Central Mixedwood subregions cover nearly 40 per cent of the province. The vegetative communities in these subregions are important because they provide summer range for livestock, prime habitat for many species of wildlife, productive watersheds, recreational areas and timber production. However, there is limited information on their ecology and succession under the influence of livestock grazing. This guide provides a framework that can be used to easily group the vegetative community types. It is hoped the classification systems presented can be used to assess the ecology of the sites and develop integrated management plans within each region. This edition is a revision of the 6th approximation of the Range Plant Community Types and Carrying Capacity for the Dry and Central Mixedwood and the 7th approximation with minor corrections.

Natural ecological communities are defined as recurring assemblages of plant species; the species occurring together because they respond similarly to a variety of site attributes (Grossman et al 1994). The species that make up the assemblage often show an affinity or association with each other (Kent and Coker 1992). To develop an initial tracking list of natural ecological community elements, publications describing vegetation in Alberta were reviewed and discussions were held with knowledgeable individuals. Community types that have been described as 'unusual', 'uncommon', 'of limited extent' or 'encountered infrequently' by vegetation experts were considered for inclusion on the Ecological Community Tracking List. Community types that have been described as 'in decline' or 'threatened' by vegetation experts were also considered for inclusion. Only natural communities were considered. The Subalpine subregion is a Rocky Mountain altitudinal vegetation zone. The valley bottoms of the region are used for recreational horseback riding and commercial trail riding operations. As well, in the southern part of the subregion, extensive areas of the subalpine are used to forage cattle. However, there is little information available on how grazing influences the plant community. To help develop range management prescriptions for the province, carrying capacity guides are being developed, including a plant classification system, for each natural and subregion in the province. This guide represents an analysis of the Alpine subregion, identifying over 100 plant community types. The dominant plant species, canopy cover, environmental conditions, response to grazing, forage production and carrying capacity are outlined for each type. This is a revision of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd approximations of the supalpine guide.

In July 2004, areas within Birch Mountains Wildland Provincial Park were surveyed to document small patch ecological communities. Small patch ecological communities add considerably to the diversity of a site, harbouring flora and potentially fauna dependent on these specialized habitats. They are, however, often overlooked in vegetation studies because they are neither extensive nor common enough to be considered representative. The focus of this study was to look within the matrix of the representative ecological communities to find and document the small patch communities that may be significant in a provincial context. The Birch Mountains are one of several highland areas in northeastern Alberta. The slopes of the Birch Mountains are classified as part of the Lower Boreal Highlands Natural Subregion while the higher plateau areas are considered within the Upper Boreal Highlands Natural Subregion. The vegetative communities in this subregion provide summer range for livestock, primary habitat for wildlife, productive watersheds, timber and recreational areas. However, there is little information available on how grazing influences the plant community. To help develop range management prescriptions for the province, carrying capacity guides are being developed, including a plant classification system, for each natural and subregion in the province. This guide represents an analysis of the Peace River Parkland subregion, identifying some 66 plant community types. The dominant plant species, canopy cover, environmental conditions, forage production and carrying capacity are outlined for each type.
