Description

Located in a transition zone between parkland and boreal forest, the park protects marshes, mixed wood forests, beautiful sand beaches and lakeshore landscapes that support a diverse community of birds and other wildlife. Despite its name, the lake’s depth actually creates a thermal basin that prevents ice forming until well into December. As a result, the birding season here is extended significantly. Not only is this a great place to see waterfowl and shorebirds, hundreds of songbirds and other forest species live in the varied and rich habitats in the park. Many species use the sheltering forests of the park as wintering grounds.

The Buffalo Lake Integrated Shoreland Management Plan was developed to manage human activities, maintain biodiversity, and promote environmental quality on Buffalo Lake's shorelands in anticipation of increasing visitor use and development pressures. The plan provides direction for managing the water management right-of-way which surrounds the lake and the emergent vegetation found within the lake's littoral zone (up to 100 metres from the bank). The plan outlines how public land and natural resources in the planning area will be managed to achieve provincial government objectives while recognizing the interests and needs of local authorities, residents and lake users.

Buffalo Lake is one of the largest lakes in central Alberta and is recognized as being important for breeding waterbirds. The lake is also becoming increasingly popular for recreational and other developments. Several planning exercises are underway that will guide development and land use around Buffalo Lake. In 2007, Alberta Fish and Wildlife Division, conducted a comprehensive survey of bird species around Buffalo Lake. The goal was to prioritize shoreline areas based on the abundance and relative conservation importance of species around the lake, and to highlight areas where the protection of important bird habitats should be incorporated into land-use decisions. A total of 145 species of birds were detected or encountered during point counts, and other activities on the lake. Thirty of these species were classified being of "Sensitive" status in Alberta; no species of higher risk were present in 2007. Description

The potential impacts on colonial nesting species and other waterbirds need to be addressed in light of increased industrial development, agricultural activity and modern recreational opportunities within the northeast region of Alberta. Long-term monitoring and the assessment of species occurrence, productivity, and behaviour on a sample of lakes are key to determining the effects of habitat loss and alteration. In 2003, we monitored a large sample of lakes using a combination of aerial and boat survey techniques. We continued observations of previously surveyed lakes to delineate population trends, and began detailed analyses of lakeshore habitat. Nest counts, especially of Western and Eared Grebes, supplemented our knowledge of populations potentially at risk of decline due to human activities. As pressure to develop lakes for recreational cottages and other uses increases, our fragile and limited lakeshore resources are impacted. Careful management is therefore required to protect lakes and their shores against permanent disturbance or loss. Lakeshore property owners play an important role in ensuring that lakes and shores remain undamaged and that access along publicly owned shores is maintained.
