Description

This is a raster dataset of the thickness of the Paskapoo Formation. It is a derived dataset created by the subtraction of the base of the Paskapoo Formation from the top of the formation, which in the western part of Alberta is also the bedrock topography. The gridded isopach data cover only the undeformed part of the Paskapoo Formation that extends west to the front ranges of the Rocky Mountains. The isopach data do not include those parts of the formation affected by tectonic folding or thrusting. The dataset is in ESRI ASCII grid format.

Description

This dataset is a grid of the thickness of the Haynes aquifer within the Paskapoo Formation. The Haynes aquifer is a regionally extensive body of sand that lies in the bottom part of the Paskapoo Formation. The isopach was created from the modelled results of the average sandiness of 25 m thick slices in boreholes completed within the Paskapoo Formation. Parts of the aquifer are as much as 100 m thick, particularly in the west near the deformation belt and in a region west of the city of Red Deer. The bulk of the unit averages about 50 m in thickness. Given the great range in elevation of the top of the unit, but the relatively uniform thickness of the bulk of the aquifer, we inferred that most of the Haynes aquifer was deposited prior to major deformation with only the western-most parts showing evidence of infill of enhanced accommodation space. Most of the Haynes aquifer is overlain by thick muddy sediments of the Lacombe Member and only outcrops along its eastern edge.

Description

In 2002 the Alberta Geological Survey initiated a project to scan and digitize water well geophysical logs from Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (ESRD) water well data holdings. Casual and summer student staff scanned hard copy logs systematically by NTS mapsheet starting with the Cold Lake area. Scanned logs were digitized into Log ASCII Standard version 2 by Divestco Ltd. This data release consists of 8,763 LAS files, comprised mostly of resistivity logs, and a tab delimited index file. About 1% of the LAS files also contain a natural gamma log. The API number (APIN) in the log header refers to Alberta Environment's water well identifier number used at the time the logs were digitized. There are 205 records where the API number starts with 900. We were unable to confidently match the log file surface location to an AENV location for these records. This dataset is part of the three-dimensional (3-D) hydrostratigraphic model of the Sylvan Lake sub-basin in the Edmonton-Calgary Corridor, central Alberta. It represents the structure top of hydrostratigraphic unit (HSU) C2, which contains the majority of fine-grained materials in the Neogene-Quaternary succession of the Sylvan Lake sub-basin and is the top boundary of the model domain. This dataset supplements Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) Open File Report 2014-10, which includes a full description of steps taken to produce the structure grid.

The base of the Paskapoo Formation is unconformable with the underlying Scollard Formation. Alberta Geological Survey differentiates the Paskapoo Formation from the underlying Scollard Formation by the first thick sandstone above the uppermost coal seam of the Ardley coal zone. We defined 'thick sandstone' to be 5 m or more thick. This dataset contains the gridded results of the structural surface of the base of the Paskapoo Formation modelled from stratigraphic picks of the >5 m sand above the Scollard Formation coal from oil and gas industry gamma-ray logs. We modelled only the undeformed part of the Paskapoo Formation, which lies east of the Rocky Mountains deformation belt. Because of uncertainty in defining the Paskapoo-Scollard contact, we selected the P20 (20th percentile or low estimate) modelled surface of those data, which is about 5 m deeper than the P50 or median estimated surface. Description

This is a 1000 m cell-sized raster grid dataset of the top of the sandstone of the Haynes member of the Paskapoo Formation. We mapped the sandstone using 3-D geostatistical modelling algorithms from data derived from sand calculations of 25 m thick slice intervals of the Paskapoo Formation. We selected the >55% sand isovalue to define sandstone, based on the results of mini-models that show vertical hydraulic connections being established if sand abundance is 55% or greater. This grid represents the upper surface of that three-dimensional body defined by the >55% sand threshold value. Alberta Geological Survey Bulletin 66 provides a detailed description of how the unit was defined. The dataset is in ESRI ASCII grid format.
