Description

This world-class facility provides 35 kilometres of well-maintained cross-country ski trails for skate and classic skiing, a biathlon range, and a luge track. The centre can be enjoyed in spring, summer and fall as well. Forested trails offer opportunities for hiking and mountain biking; there are breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains and foothills from Athabasca Lookout viewpoint; and the centre also serves as a group use area during camping season. Athabasca Lookout Nordic Centre is 20 kilometres north of Hinton – follow Highway 16 west to the Grande Cache turnoff then follow Highway 40 north for 14 kilometres to Athabasca Tower Road.

Cataract Creek is managed as a Snow Vehicles Zone within a Forest Land Use Zone. This ensures that its recreation values are maintained for public use. The area is part of the Central Rockies Ecosystem. The wildlife that you see here move throughout this large ecosystem. To help protect the animals and the health of the ecosystem, please minimize your impact on the environment. There are natural hazards in the Cataract Creek area; you are responsible for your own safety. Find out from conservation officers or from any Kananaskis Country Visitor Information Centre of hazards that may be in the areas you are travelling. Snowmobile use within Kananaskis Country is restricted to trails at McLean Creek, Sibbald Flat, Cataract Creek, Powderface Trail linking McLean Creek to Sibbald Flat, and Big Elbow Loop. Designated trail junctions are signed; refer to the map to assist in finding your location.

Description

The Highwood/Cataract area stretches from the boundary of Peter Lougheed Provincial Park to the southern border of Kananaskis Country and encompasses the upper reaches of the Highwood River watershed. It includes a diversity of landscapes ranging from stark high alpine beauty, to lush spruce and lodgepole pine forests, to the rich grazing lands of the Rockies’ front ranges. Some interesting features of the area include the Highwood Road Corridor Wildlife Sanctuary, the Plateau Mountain Ecological Reserve, and parts of Don Getty and Elbow-Sheep Wildland Provincial Parks.

This Provincial Park contributes to the preservation goal of Alberta's Parks and Protected Areas program by preserving the adjacent lakes and wetlands of the Lower Foothills.

Rock Lake-Solomon Creek Wildland Park is located northwest of Hinton and extends from the Athabasca River in the south to Rock Lake Provincial Recreation Area (PRA) and Willmore Wilderness to the northwest. You can reach the south end of the park along Solomon Creek by taking the road to the hamlet of Brule. The access to Rock Lake PRA is 70 kilometres north of Hinton. A 32 km graveled road leaves Highway 40 and winds along a route used by the petroleum and forest industries. Use caution when traveling this road and be aware that the road is not regularly maintained.
