In cattle, the parasite Cysticercus bovis is commonly called bladder-worm or beef measles. This parasite is actually the larvae of the human tapeworm, Taenia saginata. The prevalence of cysticercosis in cattle in Canada is very low. When outbreaks occur, they are usually associated with a human carrier who has had close contact with cattle or cattle feed.

Many parasites infect fish, but only a few such as the broad tapeworm, Diphyllobothrium spp., occasionally infect man. The larval stage of these parasites develops in fish while the adults develop in various fish-eating mammals, marine mammals or fish-eating birds. The best known species in this group, D. latum, is the longest tapeworm in man, reaching a length of 10 meters. This parasite is found worldwide and is common in countries where raw or undercooked fish is eaten.

Description

Crop micronutrient concentrations of both vegetative tissues and grain, if applicable, were measured from 17 selected AESA soil quality benchmark sites in the fall of 2003. Micronutrients analyzed included boron, cadmium, chlorine, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, selenium, silicon and zinc. The purpose of this report is to provide an account of these micronutrient concentrations and to correlate them with a number of selected soil properties including soil pH, organic carbon, sand, silt and clay content, cation exchange capacity and calcium carbonate concentrations. In addition, the uptake, translocation and importance of each micronutrient are discussed, as is a summary of the effect of micronutrient partitioning between the grain and straw fraction, the effect of landscape form and the effect of provincial ecoregion on their concentration.

Description

Ensuring adequate soil fertility levels and effectively managing nutrients are two keys to growing alfalfa successfully in Alberta. Alfalfa can produce from 2 to 7 tons of dry matter per acre depending on water and nutrients levels. Climate, soil type and management will also affect alfalfa’s potential yield. Alfalfa has a high demand for nutrients compared to other crops. Table 1 gives the approximate amount of each nutrient removed per ton of dry matter alfalfa. Alfalfa also requires 4 to 5 inches of water for each ton of dry matter produced.
