Alberta's 13 irrigation districts contain more than 55 reservoirs and approximately 8,000 km of conveyance works, including canals and pipelines. Good quality irrigation water is needed for all uses of the water: agricultural production, municipal water supply, wildlife habitat, and numerous recreational activities such as fishing, camping, and golfing. A five-year study (2011 to 2015) was conducted to assess the quality of irrigation water in these districts. This report summarizes activities and findings of the 2014 sampling season.

Alberta's irrigation industry plays a significant role in the province's economic and social well-being, with almost 70 per cent of Canada's irrigated area located in Alberta's South Saskatchewan River Basin. This study was prepared for the Alberta Irrigation Projects Association and was implemented to update the economic assessment of the impacts of irrigation on the economy and social well-being of Albertans.

Irrigated agriculture accounts for a large portion of agricultural production in Alberta. Water quality is intricately linked to agricultural production. Quality production is reliant upon clean source water. Water quality deterioration can occur in a number of ways, including land use impacts from agricultural, industrial, urban, and rural development. The objectives of this study were to: assess the quality of source water used for irrigation from a food production perspective; assess changes in water quality as water travels through the irrigation infrastructure; determine if there are differences in water quality among the irrigation districts; and determine if there are differences in water quality between two types of conveyance systems.

In 2003, the Governor of the State of Montana sent a letter to the American Section of the International Joint Commission requesting that it review the 1921 Order respecting the measurement and apportionment of the St. Mary and Milk Rivers. In January 2004, the Governor of the State of Montana, at the request of the IJC, provided to the Commission a letter and attachment setting out the reasons for Montana's request. The Government of Alberta (August 2004) submission to the IJC consisted of an overall submission as well as submissions from Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development.

The purpose of the procedures manual is to provide a comprehensive handbook on land classification for irrigation, and to enhance uniformity among land classifiers.. This fourth edition of the procedures manual was printed following an amendment to the Irrigation Districts Act, Irrigation General Regulation, on February 24, 2003, allowing Irrigation Council to specify which standards are acceptable for land assessment purposes. The land irrigability classes in the current Standards for the Classification of Land for Irrigation in the Province of Alberta are the basis for selection of land for irrigation development.

The standards outline the minimum requirements with which any land must comply in order to be classified as “irrigable”, and are the standards to be used for the classification of lands for the formation of a new district, or for the reclassification of lands within a district. These standards apply to all irrigation districts in Alberta. Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, Irrigation Branch, has prepared a procedures manual for use with these standards.

This is the first soil survey report to deal solely with an area that is irrigated or proposed for irrigation development. The three soil maps that form part of this report show the kind and location of the various soil and topography types. The report describes the soil types, gives analytical data of representative profiles, and gives the average rating of each soil type. Three appendices cover problems related to land levelling, to salinity and drainage, and to fertility and management.
