The presence of weeds on industrial developments causes a number of concerns, such as fire hazards in non-vegetated areas, competition with desirable plant species, spread to adjacent land which may be cultivated land, and non-compliance with the Weed Control Act. This fact sheet provides information on preventing weeds and developing an integrated weed management plan.

Since 1975 Alberta Agriculture & Rural Development has annually surveyed custom rates and rental rates to provide information to farmers and custom operators. This publication presents a summary of custom work and rental rates. These rates are only intended as a guide. The specific objective of this survey summary is to organize and report custom rates for certain custom operations on the farm. No effort is made to evaluate the fairness of reported rates. The goal is to report what is being charged, not what should be charged. Farmers may find custom rates useful as a guide for machinery management, budgeting and financial planning for credit needs. Also, custom rates can be used as a guide in negotiating settlements for work performed for neighbors or others. Lenders, educators, government institutions and others doing budgeting or planning analysis may also find custom rates helpful in their work. Weed control in potatoes is becoming more of a challenge with each passing year. Wherever possible, pests should be managed throughout an entire rotation, not just in the current growing season. If there is a problem in the current season, managing that pest in another crop in a following year, if at all possible, may be the best management practice. Certain weeds such as wild buckwheat, Canada thistle and perennial sow thistle are examples of such problem pests.

Description

There are some very tough weeds on the prairies. They compete with valuable crop and forage plants and threaten many native plant species. Many of these weeds have been very expensive and difficult, if not impossible, to control with more traditional methods. In some instances, the chemicals used for control are non-selective compounds, which will also damage non-target plants and may leach out of sandy or gravelly soils, or compounds that give top growth control only. In addition, because of leaching, chemicals cannot be used on weeds that grow close to bodies of water. Many problem weeds are abundant in rangeland and along riverbanks and gullies, so the use of non-chemical control methods such as mowing or cultivation can be limited by the topography and size of these areas. These difficulties have prompted scientists to investigate a third alternative: the biological control of weeds.
