Description

This GIS dataset is part of a digital compilation of the bedrock geology of Alberta. It is one of the datasets used to produce Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) Map 600. This dataset contains polygons representing the location and diameter of the Steen River, Eagle Butte, and Bow City meteorite impact craters (astroblemes). The data were created in geodatabase format and output for public distribution in shapefile format. AGS Open File Report 2013-02 presents additional information on data sources related to this dataset.

Description

The dataset includes subsurface stratigraphic picks for the base of the Belly River Group/Wapiti Formation in the Alberta Plains (Townships 1 to 94, Ranges 1W4 to 14W6) made from wireline geophysical well logs. In general, the pick was made at the base of the lowest sandstone bed (overlying the Pakowki or Lea Park Formation) that was overlain by coal. If coal is absent, the pick was made at the base of the first sandstone. We screened the well data to detect errors resulting from deviated wells, as well as incorrect ground and kelly bushing elevation data. We used statistical methods to identify local and regional statistical outliers, which were examined individually.

This dataset contains the outlines of the evaluated areas for shale- and siltstone-hosted hydrocarbons in Alberta from the Energy Resources Conservation Board/Alberta Geological Survey Open File Report 2012-06. These evaluated areas are for the following units: - Duvernay Formation, - Muskwa Formation, - Montney Formation, - Basal Banff/Exshaw study area, - North Nordegg study area, and - Wilrich Member. Since its inception in 1920, the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) has drilled several thousand boreholes across the province. Most were drilled only into the unconsolidated sediments overlying the top of bedrock. In 2010, AGS staff began a project to systematically compile all of the borehole log information into a database. This Digital Data product and its companion Open File Report, OFR 2014-06 are the interim results of this initiative. The dataset comprises three tables: Sources.txt, Boreholes.txt and Intervals.txt, as well as metadata. The Sources table gives summary information about the AGS project for which each borehole was drilled. The Boreholes table gives summary information about each borehole, such as location, drilling method, date, and total depth of the hole. The Intervals table gives descriptive geological information about each distinct geological horizon encountered in the borehole, including lithology and colour of the material. This GIS dataset portrays the distribution of glacial landforms in Alberta, based on the compilation of existing government survey mapping and research literature, supplemented by new analysis of remote sensing data. It is the dataset that was used to create Alberta Geological Survey Map 604 (Glacial Landforms of Alberta) using an intermediate step of reducing the density of closely spaced line segments to make the features suitable for map production at 1:1 000 000 scale. This dataset contains the original line features without any cartographic generalization. The data were created in geodatabase format and output for public distribution in shapefile format.

The dataset includes subsurface stratigraphic picks for the formations that comprise the Beaverhill Lake Group (Townships 29 to 113, Ranges 1W4 to 13W6) made from wireline geophysical well logs. The dataset also includes picks for the underlying Elk Point Group, and the overlying Woodbend Group. Lithostratigraphic picks for the Beaverhill Lake Group include the Fort Vermilion Formation, the Swan Hills Formation, the Slave Point Formation, and the Waterways Formation (top of the Beaverhill Lake Group). Lithostratigraphic picks for the underlying Elk Point Group include the Prairie Evaporite Formation, the Sulphur Point Formation, and the Watt Mountain Formation (base of the Beaverhill Lake Group). Lithostratigraphic picks for the overlying Woodbend Group include the Cooking Lake Formation, or its equivalent.

This data release is a compilation of data that characterize Alberta groundwater springs. It was compiled from several government datasets and reports, and fieldwork conducted by Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) staff members. The source datasets include the digitized Alberta Research Council (ARC) Hydrogeology Map Series, the AGS Springs of Alberta report, ARC water chemistry data, Groundwater Resources Information Services (GWRIS) Index, Alberta Environmental Protection (AEP) springs, AGS Northeastern Alberta (NEALTA) project springs, field work conducted by Dr. J. Toth and R. Stein, and other more recent spring sampling projects. The data release includes field measurements and water chemistry analyses, as well as some isotope data. Where they are available the dataset also includes references to reports for further information. The dataset contains the results of geochemical analyses of rock samples from the Bad Heart Formation, Clear Hills region and Smoky River region (northwestern Alberta) collected by Alberta Geological Survey from 2004 to 2007. The data comprise elemental analyses of 325 rock samples, including ooidal ironstone, ooidal sandstone, sandstone, siltstone, shale, Bad Heart rubble and till, and conglomerate.

Description

This dataset accompanies Open File Report 2009-02. Between 1971 and 1983, the Alberta Research Council created a series of hydrogeological maps of Alberta. The geologists examined the sediment types present and used existing water well information to assign yield values to distinct zones within the mapped areas. They also looked at the materials, generally to a depth of 305 metres (1000 feet) below ground surface, and added the yields of the sediments encountered within this interval to arrive at a yield value for the whole. Alberta Geological Survey compiled the shapefiles for the yield polygons, digitized by the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Agency, and then digitized the remaining linework for the remaining map areas. Afterwards, we created a geodatabase of the yield polygons for the entire province and assigned yield values to the polygons based on the original maps. We also assigned the most likely formation name, age and lithology to the yield polygon.

This GIS dataset depicts the result of a geostatistical model of the bedrock topography in Alberta. This model is based on water-well litholog data, stratigraphic picks made on oil and gas petrophysical logs, data derived from digitized contour interpretations on bedrock topography maps, including bedrock outcrop locations and the 60 m grid-spaced Shuttle Rader Topography Mission digital elevation model. These data comprise the raster surface of Alberta Geological Survey Map 550, Bedrock Topography of Alberta, Canada.
