Description

This is a raster dataset of the thickness of the Paskapoo Formation. It is a derived dataset created by the subtraction of the base of the Paskapoo Formation from the top of the formation, which in the western part of Alberta is also the bedrock topography. The gridded isopach data cover only the undeformed part of the Paskapoo Formation that extends west to the front ranges of the Rocky Mountains. The isopach data do not include those parts of the formation affected by tectonic folding or thrusting. The dataset is in ESRI ASCII grid format.

Description

This dataset is a grid of the thickness of the Haynes aquifer within the Paskapoo Formation. The Haynes aquifer is a regionally extensive body of sand that lies in the bottom part of the Paskapoo Formation. The isopach was created from the modelled results of the average sandiness of 25 m thick slices in boreholes completed within the Paskapoo Formation. Parts of the aquifer are as much as 100 m thick, particularly in the west near the deformation belt and in a region west of the city of Red Deer. The bulk of the unit averages about 50 m in thickness. Given the great range in elevation of the top of the unit, but the relatively uniform thickness of the bulk of the aquifer, we inferred that most of the Haynes aquifer was deposited prior to major deformation with only the western-most parts showing evidence of infill of enhanced accommodation space. Most of the Haynes aquifer is overlain by thick muddy sediments of the Lacombe Member and only outcrops along its eastern edge.

We clipped the surface from Alberta Geological Survey's Bedrock Topography of Alberta grid using the areal extent of the Paskapoo Formation shown on Alberta Geological Survey Map 236, Geological Map of Alberta. The dataset is in ESRI ASCII grid format

Description

In 2002 the Alberta Geological Survey initiated a project to scan and digitize water well geophysical logs from Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (ESRD) water well data holdings. Casual and summer student staff scanned hard copy logs systematically by NTS mapsheet starting with the Cold Lake area. Scanned logs were digitized into Log ASCII Standard version 2 by Divestco Ltd. This data release consists of 8,763 LAS files, comprised mostly of resistivity logs, and a tab delimited index file. About 1% of the LAS files also contain a natural gamma log. The API number (APIN) in the log header refers to Alberta Environment's water well identifier number used at the time the logs were digitized. There are 205 records where the API number starts with 900. We were unable to confidently match the log file surface location to an AENV location for these records. This grid dataset is part of the three-dimensional (3-D) hydrostratigraphic model of the Sylvan Lake sub-basin in the Edmonton-Calgary Corridor, central Alberta. It represents the structure top of the Paskapoo Formation - Middle Composite Slice of the Sylvan Lake sub-basin. The Paskapoo Formation is a highly heterogeneous system. To satisfy the needs of a groundwater flow model, internal characterization of rock properties was necessary to partition the formation into three distinct geological domains. The Middle Composite Slice is the middle of these three domains.
