A water quality sampling program was conducted at Chestermere Lake and along the Western Irrigation District canal during the open water seasons of 1992 and 1993. This program was designed to determine whether Calgary's storm water has any major impact on water quality in the WID canal and Chestermere Lake.

Description

Frank Lake is a restored lake and wetland area east of High River, AB. It was designed to treat wastewaters from the High River Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Cargill Foods Limited meat packing plant, and to provide habitat for waterfowl production. Alberta Environmental Protection began a water quality monitoring program at Frank Lake in 1990. This program was designed to provide very basic characterization of the combined effluents and treatment efficiency of the first basin.

This report presents the results of 1986-88 Bow River water quality monitoring programs conducted by Alberta Environment. Plant nutrient, coliform bacteria count and aquatic plant biomass trends and differences between sites were analyzed. This program was mainly designed to detect changes in river water quality since the installation of phosphorus removal at Calgary sewage treatment plants in 1982-83.
