Description

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of various mitigation projects, and combine the most feasible projects into water management plans for the Sheep River and Highwood River basins which suffered severe flood damages at numerous times in the past, most recently in June 2013, and assess flood mitigations for the South Saskatchewan River Basin, including the feasibility of various flood mitigation projects for the City of Medicine Hat.

Description

Eight scenarios were run with the Bow River Water Quality Model (BRWQM) to support the Bow River Phosphorus Management Plan (PMP). The scenarios predicted close to 10% increase in the instream Total Phosphorus (TP) concentration above Highwood River using the loading projected by 2039. The Dissolved Oxygen (DO) was above the chronic guideline of 6.5 mg/L in all the scenarios; however, in some instances the DO was below 8.3 mg/L in May and June. The acute guideline showed two critical locations: 10 km downstream from Bonnybrook and 10 km downstream from Strathmore wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). The frequency of compliance was at or below 99.91% in these two locations for the scenarios that used the forecasted TP loading by 2039.

Technical report prepared for the Community Flood Mitigation Advisory Panel and describing proposed flood mitigation measures for the Elbow River, Sheep River and Highwood River basins. The report presents the design basis, conceptual details and opinions of probable costs for the proposed flood mitigation measures. Following the flooding in southern Alberta in June of 2013, The Community Flood Mitigation Advisory Panel was established in July 2013 to advise the government of Alberta on possible flood mitigation measures that may be implemented to reduce future flood damages.

The report describes the fish communities of the Little Bow River and Mosquito Creek, based on the results of field sampling conducted in 2009. Assessment of the fish community was completed as part of the Twin Valley Dam environmental monitoring program. Monitoring was intended to determine the environmental impacts of the construction and operation of Twin Valley Dam and the effectiveness of environmental mitigation measures. In 2009, the fish assemblages in the Little Bow River and Mosquito Creek were generally unchanged compared to previous post-dam monitoring results. The Little Bow River fish assemblage is influenced by entrainment of fish from the Highwood River upstream from the Twin Valley Dam Reservoir and by movement and migration of fish from Travers Reservoir, downstream from Twin Valley Dam.
