Description

This wildlife status report looks at the wood bison, the largest terrestrial mammal in North America. Originally scattered in small, non-migratory herds from northern Alberta to Alaska, hunting nearly eliminated the wood bison at the end of the 19th century. Reintroduction efforts have recently been undertaken in northern Canada, including one location in Alberta near Assumption, known as the Hay-Zama herd. In Alberta, the wood bison is considered At Risk, and bison are also listed as Endangered under Alberta's Wildlife Act. This report summarizes the history and ecology of the wood bison, causes for its decline, current pressures, recovery and conservation efforts, and its current status in Alberta. This wildlife status report looks at the western spiderwort, a herbaceous perennial wildflower and the only species of Tradescantia native to Alberta. Widely distributed in the central United States, the western spiderwort is found at only four locations in Canada, one of which is along the old dune fields east of Pakowki Lake in Alberta. It is designated as Threatened in Canada. This report summarizes existing information on western spiderwort in Alberta as a step in assessing its status in the province. It is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

Description

The lake sturgeon is a unique component of Alberta's wildlife and a prized sportfish. In Alberta, lake sturgeon are now confined to two areas: the North Saskatchewan and South Saskatchewan river systems. This project assessed the management utility of existing harvest data on species populations by means of a creel survey on the South Saskatchewan River conducted in the summer of 2000. The survey data were compared to data collected from an annual questionnaire sent to all holders of a sturgeon fishing licence.

In Canada, all of the known naturally occurring populations of western blue flag occur in the Cardston area of southwestern Alberta, within 10 km of the United States border. Prior to this project, six sites of naturally occurring western blue flag were confirmed in Alberta. As a result of investigations carried out in 2000, it is believed that only four of the six remain. Two new sites were discovered near previously known locations. Inventories conducted at all sites in 2000 revealed a total of 8705 stems. Information is inadequate to determine populations trends at most sites; however, western blue flag appears to be declining at a site in Police Outpost Provincial Park.

This study reports a floristic and landscape survey of Ft. Assiniboine Sandhills Wildland Park. The park spans about 6,600 ha and is located along the north side of the Athabasca River northeast of the hamlet of Ft. Assiniboine. Thirty person-days of fieldwork were conducted in June and August 1997; 48 0.03 ha plots were established and described; miscellaneous observations were made outside the plots. A total of 434 species of plants were found in the study area, of which 20 species (4.59%) are classified as provincially rare. Of the 20 rare species, 6 were vascular plants, 7 were mosses, and 7 were lichens. By taxonomic group, there were 258 vascular taxa, 90 mosses, 14 hepatics, and 74 lichens. The typical 0.03 ha plot contained 50.2 species (s.d. 18.9, median 49.5), with a maximum of 97 species and a minimum of 9 species/plot.
