However, the species has made a significant comeback in recent years, although it is still listed as endangered in both Canada and Alberta. This report reviews and summarizes information on the status of the anatum peregrine falcon in Alberta, as a step in reviewing the status of the subspecies in the province. Description

The Ministik Lake Game Bird Sanctuary is a large area of public land some 24 km southeast of Edmonton. Its significance for waterfowl production has been formally recognized since 1911, when it became Alberta's bird sanctuary. Since 1938, Ducks Unlimited Canada has made substantial investments in the area to enhance waterfowl production. Although there has been no formal management plan for the Sanctuary, conflicting land use demands are relatively few, and the area persists today in almost a wilderness condition. In 1985, Ducks Unlimited Canada proposed a major expenditure of funds to further enhance waterfowl production, and requested that the GOA institute a more formal arrangement to ensure land base security. The following plan is a cooperative effort between Ducks Unlimited Canada and Alberta Forestry. The plan represents a meshing of existing policies to allow positive initiatives to build upon the existing situation, and does not represent any major departures from long-term...

Description

Six species of swallows occur in Alberta. Most have similar life histories and requirements for food and water. Only cliff and barn swallows regularly build mud nests on buildings and other structures. This habit occasionally causes problems. Cliff swallows can be a nuisance because they nest in large colonies of up to several hundred birds. Other swallows tend to nest in smaller colonies or in single pairs and consequently do not usually cause a major problem.
