Description

Trapping is a traditional activity that reflects cultural and aboriginal lifestyles, which Alberta Community Development (CD) wishes to support. A number of Registered Fur Management Areas (RFMA) were included within parks and protected areas designated or expanded between 1995 and 2001. Commitments to trappers in these areas will be honoured. In addition to the Wildlife Act and its regulations, the Provincial Parks Act and its regulations and the Wilderness Areas, Ecological Reserves and Natural Areas Act, fur trapping in Alberta's Parks and Protected Areas will also be managed pursuant to this policy. The intent of this policy is to ensure an appropriate balance is maintained between fur trapping and the public's desire for opportunities to view wildlife in a natural and safe setting and to make trapping operations as similar as possible between parks and protected areas and general Crown land. Elbow-Sheep Wildland Provincial Park is located in Kananaskis Country approximately 70 kilometres west of Calgary. The intent of a wildland park is to retain large areas of high quality, natural landscape where opportunities for backcountry recreation and tourism activities such as hiking, trail riding, hunting, guiding and outfitting are provided in a way that ensures the retention of the land in a natural state and minimizes interference with natural processes. Management plans are prepared to ensure that the desired management intent and objectives are implemented. The plan will define objectives for preservation, heritage appreciation, and outdoor recreation and tourism activities. It will also define appropriate uses.

The Prairie Conservation Action Plan (PCAP) focuses on conserving the biological diversity of Alberta's native prairie ecosystems. PCAP recognizes the past and present role of ranching in preserving the prairie ecosystem. It also recognizes the heritage value of the prairie, along with its cultural and economic contributions. Through an approach of consensus and co-operation, the program encourages the incorporation of conservation ethics as part of all activities and management decisions on the prairies, particularly with community initiatives. PCAP is implemented through the Prairie Conservation Forum (PCF), which is a multi-stakeholder group that meets periodically to discuss and monitor initiatives for prairie conservation.
