Manure use can provide an economic return to the farmer and be beneficial to the environment. When manure is applied according to crop demand and at the appropriate times, manure can provide some of the nutrients required by many crops. Manure also increases soil organic matter and improves soil structure. However, manure can be a pollutant if it reaches surface water (such as streams, rivers or lakes) or leaches past the root zone of crops and into shallow groundwater.

The expansion of hog production increases land requirements for hog manure application. Independent of this need is the fact that more farmland is being converted to low disturbance seeding, a management practice similar to zero-tillage. Low disturbance manure injection presents an opportunity to meet the hog producer's need for more land and presents the grain grower with an alternative fertilizer application system. This research update presents results of testing of seven soil openers for their ability to effectively inject high volumes of hog manure while satisfying the 30 per cent soil disturbance guideline for low disturbance seeding.

Use emergency control measures if wind erosion is imminent or as soon as the soil starts to blow. Select the appropriate measure based on the soil condition. Some measures involve creating ridges at right angles to the prevailing wind. Others involve covering the soil with straw or manure. Once erosion has been brought under control, monitor the field. If the field begins to erode again, take further control measures. Emergency control measures are not a long-term solution to wind erosion. Preventive measures, such as maintaining a crop residue cover, adding field shelterbelts or growing perennial crops, are essential to protect the soil.

The ability to control odours from agricultural waste storage has always been a problem for the agricultural industry. This update summarizes findings of a series of five projects to develop effective odour controlling coverings for hog manure lagoons. Studies were conducted on the effectiveness of supported and unsupported covers, with emphasis on cover durability, straw type, odour reduction period, and management problems. In the final project, several straw types were used in full scale tests on lagoons.
