Description

This dataset is a GIS version of part of Map 227, which is a regional synthesis of various published and unpublished maps. The data represent drift isopachs for Alberta. The southern part of Alberta, from 49 to 56 degrees north, was primarily compiled from existing 1:250,000 bedrock topography maps. The interpretation of the remaining northern portion of the province was based mostly on limited borehole data and information from existing 1:250,000 hydrogeological maps. The exposed areas represent areas where drift is absent or thin and discontinuous. Contour intervals are irregular and depend on local data density.

This dataset is a GIS version of Map 226, which is a regional synthesis of published and unpublished maps. The data represent 100 m elevation contours of the bedrock subcrop for Alberta. The southern part of Alberta, from 49 to 56 degrees north, was primarily compiled from existing 1:250,000 bedrock topography maps. This Alberta diamond inclusion dataset includes electron microprobe analyses of garnet, clinopyroxene, olivine, ferropericlase and rutile inclusions from diamonds sampled by the Buffalo Head Hills kimberlite field. The data are compiled from Davies et al. (2004) and Banas (2006). Diamond inclusions are of particular research interest in diamond exploration and mantle petrology because they provide direct information about the chemical composition of upper and lower mantle and about the petrogenetic sources of diamonds in a given area/deposit.

The first clue to the presence of possible diamond-bearing source rocks in northern Alberta was the discovery of a perfect octahedral diamond, estimated at about 0.83 carats in weight, by farm worker Einar Opdahl during 1958 in the Evansburg area of west-central Alberta. Since the Opdahl diamond, no new diamond finds were reported in northern Alberta until the 1990s, when several occurrences of alluvial diamond and diamondiferous kimberlite were discovered.

This GIS dataset is one of a collection of shapefiles representing part of Chapter 8 of the Atlas, Middle Cambrian to Lower Ordovician Strata of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, Figure 22, Cambrian-Lower Ordovician Structure. Shapefiles were produced from archived digital files created by the Alberta Geological Survey in the mid-1990s, and edited in 2005-06 to correct, attribute and consolidate the data into single files by feature type and by figure.
