Description

This report was prepared to fulfill reporting requirements mandated by the Lower Athabasca Region Surface Water Quality Management Framework for the Lower Athabasca River, which supports the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan. Each annual report communicates the status of surface water quality at the Athabasca River at Old Fort monitoring site for the calendar year indicated.

This report presents a summary of annual streamflow on the Lower Athabasca River and water use by the mineable oil sands sector and other licensed users, relative to weekly management limits, and provides analyses of six of the seven adaptive management triggers. This evaluation fulfills commitments for public reporting outlined in the Lower Athabasca Region Surface Water Quantity Management Framework.

This document outlines policies and procedures followed by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas in dealing with some situations related to regulated drinking water and wastewater systems that are not covered by the regulations. The information is used by EPA staff when assessing applications related to EPEA approvals or authorizations of municipal drinking water and wastewater systems. This includes procedures for protecting water bodies, calculating effluent limit for discharge too water bodies and land, considering alternative treatment technology and for options for improving quality of stormwater. The manual has been revised to stream processes for considering new technology and to remove outdated material on the protocol for responding to failed bacterial tests in drinking water systems.

In rural Alberta, 90 per cent of people use private well water supplies for domestic use (e.g., drinking, cooking, bathing). Domestic well water systems are not regulated by the provincial or federal governments. The Government of Alberta along with Alberta Health Services (AHS) provides water chemistry testing of private well water and information and advice on safe water for domestic purposes; however, it is the responsibility of well owners to ensure the quality and safety of their water supply. Water quality may be impacted by contamination from natural sources or human activities and cause noticeable aesthetic issues or potential health concerns. Water samples are collected and submitted by well owners through local AHS sites for analysis of routine chemistry and trace element parameters.
