Description

Declines in amphibian populations at local, regional and global scales have focused attention on this group of vertebrates. Of the 10 amphibian species in Alberta, seven are listed as "at risk" by provincial or federal agencies. In response to concern about amphibians populations, and a lack of amphibian monitoring in the province, the Researching Amphibian Numbers in Alberta (RANA) program was initiated in 1997 with two main objectives: to collect long-term information on amphibian populations, and to increase public awareness of the importance of amphibians and wetland conservation. Seven RANA sites were established in Alberta and monitored using pitfall trapping at a designated poind within each study area. This report presents an analysis of pitfall trapping data collected between 1997 and 2008.

The Public Lands Administration Regulation, or PLAR, is a provincial law of general application that applies to all persons including aboriginal peoples. However, aboriginal peoples do enjoy constitutionally protected rights to some activities on provincial Crown land in Alberta, such as hunting, fishing, and trapping for food. As a result, portions of PLAR may not be applicable to such persons doing these activities. This document sets out how PLAR implementation should be reconciled with these rights.

The bull trout, the provincial fish of Alberta, is a native species that occurs in all of the major river basins of the province. It has been designated a Species of Special Concern because of the declines in distribution and abundance, as well as continued threats from habitat alteration and introduced competitive species. This plan provides background information on the species and outlines a set of objectives and management actions to help meet the goal of restoring and maintaining viable, self-sustaining bull trout populations throughout the majority of the species' historic range in the province, and to once again provide some measure of harvest opportunity for the species. Conservation management plans are developed for Species of Special Concern in Alberta, to provide guidance for land and resource management decisions that affect the species and their habitat. The Milk River Basin Species at Risk Conservation Strategy outlines a process by provide appropriate management on critical parts of the landscape to achieve multi-species conservation. This year's report includes a summary of existing information on species at risk, identification of data gaps, results of fish and wildlife inventories from within the project area, and a species selection process. Also included are habitat suitability models for project management species, maps showing habitat distribution throughout the Milk River Basin, descriptions of natural processes within the grassland natural region, and a demonstration of beneficial management practices.

The willow leafminer (Micruapteryx salcifoliella) is a small gray moth native to North America. The caterpillars of this moth feed on willow leaves periodically causing extensive damage to willow stands in the province. In 2011, an inter-provincial outbreak of this insect damaged vast tracks of willow stands in Alberta. This brochure provides more information on the insect and how to recognize and control the damage caused by the caterpillar.

In response to stakeholder concerns of a decline in the quality and quantity of trophy rams available in some areas, SRD has completed an assessment of 35 years of trophy sheep registration and aerial survey data for bighorn sheep. The assessment indicates the harvest levels need to be adjusted to bring them into line with the management guidelines in the Management Plan for Bighorn Sheep in Alberta 1992. There are no immediate regulation changes planned, but we clearly need to work with provincial hunters and the outfitter/guides to achieve a better balance with our objectives.
