Description

Black bears (Ursus americanus) continue to damage beehives in the Peace River area of Alberta. The Alberta Fish and Wildlife Division initiated intensive bear control and studies of beeyard damages in 1972 and studies of bear biology, electric fence effectiveness, translocations and electro-shock conditioning since then. These programs have been sumtiarized in earlier reports (Quaedvlieg, et. al. 1973, Gunson 1974, Denison and MacGougan 1975, Pecharsky 1975, Gunson 1975, Allen 1976, Dorrance and Gunson 1976, Gunson and Pipella 1977, Gunson and Cole 1977). This report summarizes data on damages and bear captures from 1972 to 1976, inclusive.

Description

The Alberta Fish and Wildlife Division has captured black bears (Ursus amerIcanus) at damaged beeyards and other depedatlon or nuisance localities In the Peace River area (Figure 1) from 1972 to 1976. Most of these bears have been shot following capture. Results of studies of beeyard damages, electric fence and taste-aversion prevention methods, translocatIons, and electro-shock conditioning have been reported elsewhere (2, A, 5, 3, 1; re spectively). This report summarizes biological observations of captured bears. Techniques of biological examination have been presented In earlier reports.

This report summarizes preliminary radio-telemetric monitoring of black bears following damages to beehives. Nine bears were translocated distances of 18 to 122 km. Four radio-collared bears were released at the site of capture Four translocated bears returned distances of 22.9, 23.3, 37.4 and 38.6 km to the area of capture. Three bearstranslocated distances of 48.3, 69.5 and 101 km, did not return. Movements of two control bears were extensive; greatest distances between locations were 24 and 35 km. Data are compared to that from other studies of translocated bears and implications to the management of the bear-beehive conflict are discussed.

Serious damage to apiaries by black bears continued during 1973. A damage survey and bear control program v^as established to provide comprehensive data on the extent and distribution of damage and to remove individual problem bears. Three hundred and thirty-seven damage complaints were investigated. Estimates of loss are 150,000 dollars for the. May to August summer period and about 200,000 dollars for the entire season. Loss per bear attack during the summer months was 289 dollars. One hundred and eighty-two bears were removed by leg-snaring, culvert-trapping and shooting. In addition approximately 200 bears were removed by beekeepers. Only two of 20 experimental electric fences were penetrated by bears throughout the summer.
