Description

In Alberta, equalized assessment is the means of comparing property wealth in a uniform manner for all municipalities. Alberta uses an ad valorem assessment and tax system where property taxes are based on wealth and wealth is measured by the value of property expressed as an assessment. Equalizing an assessment is simply a process of adjusting each municipality's taxable assessment to a common year in accordance with current legislation and policy. The equalization process results in a common provincial assessment base that is used to determine the amount of requisition for each requisitioning body.

All municipalities and Metis Settlements are eligible for Canada Community-Building Fund (formerly Gas Tax Fund) funding. The program provides conditional grants for capital-related projects which meet program eligibility criteria. CCBF funding is allocated to municipalities on a per capita basis. The annual program budget is subject to Canada advising Alberta of the yearly provincial funding. Municipalities are advised of their annual CCBF funding allocations after Alberta's funding has been confirmed by Canada and specific funding allocations have been authorized by the Minister of Alberta Municipal Affairs.

The Municipal Government Act (MGA) describes pecuniary interest and sets out the procedures you must follow if a matter in which you have a pecuniary interest comes up at a council meeting or a committee of council meeting. These rules are designed to protect the public interest while ensuring that your ability to work is not adversely affected by your election to council.
