Description

The MLA Farm Property Assessment Review Committee was established in 1997 to review a number of issues related to the assessment and taxation of farm property in Alberta. The committee prepared a discussion paper, consulted with a wide range of stakeholders in the fall of 1998, and released a follow-up summary of the consultation feedback in May 1999 entitled Farm Consultation Report: Assessing Issues and Taking the Next Steps. In the following two years, the committee held further meetings with stakeholders to look at potential solutions to the issues, and conducted research into those options. A draft report was prepared for internal government review, and for review by a key stakeholders group of municipal and agricultural representatives.

To address a number of key issues, the MLA Committee reviewed the work of the Farm Property Assessment Steering Committee established in 1995. A series of nine key issues was identified along with several recommendations. Those issues and recommendations were outlined in a discussion paper circulated by the Committee in the fall of 1998. The discussion paper included a questionnaire for people to use in responding to the various issues involved in the review. Public meetings also were held in 12 locations across the province.
