The Local Government Fiscal Framework (LGFF) is Alberta’s primary funding mechanism for providing local governments with predictable infrastructure and operating grant support. LGFF funding is allocated annually to eligible recipients based on a funding formula. The LGFF is replacing the Municipal Sustainability Initiative, which was in place from 2007 to 2023.

This annual publication provides a summary of the performance Alberta municipalities through a number of financial and non-financial indicators. The indicators evaluate the current and long-term finances of a municipality, examine whether a municipality is investing in maintaining infrastructure critical to the health and safety of residents, and assess the ability of the municipality to provide services desired by the community.

As part of the tools Alberta Municipal Affairs uses to measure its performance, the ministry has developed a number of municipal indicators which measure specific aspects of each municipality's governance, finances or community. This fact sheet provides an explanation of each municipal indicator and how it are used by the Government of Alberta. These indicators can also be used by municipalities to obtain useful information and alerts to emerging challenges.

The intent of this document is to identify those areas of the Municipal Government Act (MGA) relating to petitions, and to supplement and explain specific sections or applications of the MGA. This is not a legal document. It is only a brief summary of the petitioning requirements. Do not base your decisions on this summary alone, but use it in conjunction with the appropriate legislation. Appendix A is a listing of the applicable references to petitions within the MGA. You are urged to obtain an office consolidation of the MGA, including amendments, prior to initiating a petition.
