Description

Provides policy and procedures information for the Public Security Peace Officer Program in Alberta, which is unique in Canada. The program gives different levels of government the opportunity to obtain peace officer status for community safety enhancement or specialized law enforcement needs. This program operates under the auspices of the Peace Officer Act, allowing the Government of Alberta to designate agencies and provide individuals with peace officer status for specific job functions. Duties and functions within the program vary greatly and include commercial vehicle enforcement, animal control, enforcement related to consumption of liquor and cannabis in public spaces, and authority for out-of-province police officers when in Alberta.

Description

The Municipal Policing Assistance Grant Program (MPAG) helps communities meet the costs of policing services and supports government's commitment to address the financial impact of policing on municipalities. Municipalities are expected to use the funds to ensure adequate and effective policing and policing oversight, to assist in implementation of provincial policing initiatives, and/or to enhance policing services to residents. All municipalities that pay for their own policing qualify for this program. The grant is issued annually and no application is required. Recipients must provide reports on how the grant funds were used.

The Municipal Policing Assistance Grant Program helps communities meet the costs of policing services and supports government's commitment to address the financial impact of policing on municipalities. Municipalities are expected to use the funds to ensure adequate and effective policing and policing oversight, to assist in implementation of provincial policing initiatives, and/or to enhance policing services to residents. It also describes the method by which the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will work with municipal government, law enforcement, provincial government departments, the funeral services industry, the healthcare sector, and other stakeholders in the event of a mass fatality incident in Alberta.
