Description

This manual was developed to primarily assist Department Bridge staff in the planning and scheduling of bridge maintenance, rehabilitation and replacement activities. Typical management/maintenance strategies are outlined for the various structure types on the roadway network. The strategies have been developed with the view of maximising the return on the investment in the structure. It should be recognised that modifications to the suggested strategies may be necessary to accommodate site specific concerns or limitations.

Description

The Alberta Transportation bridge inspection program is an essential part of a comprehensive inventory, inspection, maintenance, and data management system called the Bridge Inspection and Maintenance (BIM) System. The inspection component, introduced in 1987, allows for regular scheduled inspections at all bridge and culvert sites. These inspections provide information to the system that allow inspection management, maintenance programming, budget development, strategic planning, and life cycle planning so that the safety of the traveling public and the investment in bridge structures is optimized. Occasionally, the regular Level 1 inspections highlight problems that require more detailed inspections in order to determine the proper course of action to address a problem. The Level 2 inspections are the tools that provide the detailed inspection and test information to the system. The purpose of the highway system is to provide safe comfortable convenient transportation for people and goods. Traffic control devices and signs are an integral part of this system and provide the medium for the road authority to communicate vital information to the motorist along the highway. This is accomplished through the use of regulatory and warning signs, including signs outlining speed limits and other regulations pertaining to the safe operation of the vehicle. Of equal importance are the guide signs that direct motorists to their destinations and signs that provide information on the facilities adjacent to the highway system. The purpose of this manual is to establish guidelines for the consistent and standard application of guide and information signs along the provincial highway system in Alberta.

It replaced the Alberta Transportation Project Administration Manual issued in 1999, and has itself been replaced by information in the Engineering Consultant Guidelines.

Description

The first edition of the Guidelines for Assessing Pavement Preservation Strategies, issued in June 2002, provided a framework for the assessment, analysis and rehabilitation design for pavements that were near the end of their expected performance lives. This second edition of the guidelines expands the June 2002 edition to include strategies and treatments for pavements of all ages. The new guidelines will be used by Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation staff and by engineering consultants to select pavement preservation strategies throughout life of the pavement.
