Description

The purpose of this study is to investigate the safety performance of long combination vehicles (LCVs) relative to the safety performance of passenger vehicles, straight trucks and bobtails, tractor semitrailers, and legal-length tractor double trailers operating on the LCV network and urban areas. Findings of the study will help define future truck size and weight policy for Alberta highways, and provide information to policy makers in Alberta and its trading partners concerning LCV safety.

The Alberta Transportation bridge inspection program is an essential part of a comprehensive inventory, inspection, maintenance, and data management system called the Bridge Inspection and Maintenance (BIM) System. The inspection component, introduced in 1987, allows for regular scheduled inspections at all bridge and culvert sites. These inspections provide information to the system that allow inspection management, maintenance programming, budget development, strategic planning, and life cycle planning so that the safety of the traveling public and the investment in bridge structures is optimized. Occasionally, the regular Level 1 inspections highlight problems that require more detailed inspections in order to determine the proper course of action to address a problem. In order to achieve consistent practices with other jurisdictions in Canada, the department has adopted right shoulder widths for interchange ramps and weaving length dimensions consistent with the Transportation Association of Canada’s (TAC) Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads, 1999 Edition.

An “active work area” is a construction/maintenance area within the highway right-of-way where workers are present operating heavy equipment, acting as flag persons, working with hand tools on the ground, etc.

The purpose of the highway system is to provide safe comfortable convenient transportation for people and goods. Traffic control devices and signs are an integral part of this system and provide the medium for the road authority to communicate vital information to the motorist along the highway. This is accomplished through the use of regulatory and warning signs, including signs outlining speed limits and other regulations pertaining to the safe operation of the vehicle. Of equal importance are the guide signs that direct motorists to their destinations and signs that provide information on the facilities adjacent to the highway system. The purpose of this manual is to establish guidelines for the consistent and standard application of guide and information signs along the provincial highway system in Alberta.

This version is now obsolete. It replaced the Alberta Transportation Project Administration Manual issued in 1999, and has itself been replaced by information in the Engineering Consultant Guidelines.
