This report outlines the Panel's recommendations for a new appraisal process for health technologies and services in Alberta. The proposed process would assure Albertans that the best decisions are made and provide the best value from the basket of health services funded in the province.

The purpose of the plan is to minimize the risk of WNv infection to humans. A number of coordinated activities will provide a comprehensive program for surveillance or monitoring for WNv in Alberta, communicating with the public and with professionals, and targeted mosquito control activities.

In November 1999, the Long Term Care Review Policy Advisory Committee released the report Healthy Aging: New Directions for Care. The Committee report and additional public input and suggestions were thoroughly reviewed by Alberta Health and Wellness, and in April 2000 the government released its response to the report. Entitled Strategic Directions and Future Actions: Healthy Aging and Continuing Care in Alberta, the report presented a government strategy to develop an improved, sustainable and affordable continuing care system for Albertans. This report, Tracking Progress, shows the progress to date in each of the strategic directions set out in the government’s response, and summarizes future plans to keep continuing care reform moving forward.

Alberta Blue Cross (ABC) has been providing supplementary health care plan services since 1996. Since this time, concern has been expressed regarding ABC competing directly in the supplementary health care insurance industry and unfairly enjoying competitive advantages. In August 2002, The Minister of Health and Wellness established The Alberta Blue Cross Review Committee (Committee) to review the competitive advantages enjoyed by ABC. The Committee was also asked to review ABC's business activities within the context of its legislative framework, ABC's legal status, its status as a not-for-profit organization, its governance and accountability structures, and any other relevant issues. This report provides an overview of the Committee's findings and recommendations. It also provides the Committee's assessment and specific recommendations on key issues that have been identified.
