The Specialized Technical Equipment Program (STEP) provides consumer products and assistive technology to Albertans who are blind, partially sighted and deafblind. This equipment is necessary in maintaining one's independence at home and within their community. Eligible equipment is identified in the STEP Approved Product List.

Pursuant to the Continuing Care Act, Continuing Care Regulation, and the accommodation standards, every person living in a licensed supportive living accommodation, type A continuing care home, or type B continuing care home and their families have the opportunity to set up a resident and family council. The Resident and Family Councils Toolkit is intended to help residents and families of licensed supportive living accommodations and continuing care homes set up and maintain councils. It contains tools and ideas that may also be useful for facilities with existing councils.

According to the Continuing Care Regulation under the Continuing Care Act, all licensed type A and type B continuing care home (formerly long-term care and designated supportive living, respectively) operators are legally required to follow the provincial standards. The accommodation standards provide the standards for voluntary, public, and private organizations operating type A and B continuing care homes. The standards direct operators of continuing care homes in the delivery of quality accommodation services to residents. The purpose of the accommodation standards is to ensure that all type A and B continuing care home operators maintain a high quality of accommodation services that promote the safety, security, and quality of life for Albertans living in those continuing care homes. According to the Continuing Care Regulation under the Continuing Care Act, all licensed supportive living operators are legally required to follow the provincial standards. The accommodation standards provide the standards for voluntary, public, and private organizations operating supportive living accommodations in Alberta. Description

Alberta Health monitors all supportive living and long-term care accommodations for compliance to the Accommodation Standards, the Resident and Family Councils Act (RFCA) and the Continuing Care Health Service Standards (CCHSS). The purpose of the Accommodation Standards is to ensure accommodations maintain a high quality of accommodation services (e.g. meals, building maintenance, security and housekeeping) that promote the safety, security and quality of life of Albertans living in those accommodations. The RFCA is intended to support residents and their families in establishing an effective Resident and Family Council. The CCHSS are a set of legislated, minimum standards that operators must comply with in the provision of health care (e.g., medication management, care planning, staff training).
