Uses data from the 1996 National Population Health Survey to investigate the prevalence of chronic pain among Albertans. While 11.2 per cent report some chronic pain, about 2.3 per cent characterize their chronic pain as severe. The proportion of individuals suffering chronic pain increases with age and decreases as income increases, but does not differ by place of residence. As self-reported pain levels increase, health status decreases and use of public health care services increases. The number of individuals suffering chronic pain is projected to increase dramatically in Alberta over the coming decades due to the aging of the population, even if the prevalence of chronic pain does not change.
