Offers an overview of the current health status of patients in the Calgary West Primary Care Network, indicators of the Network's current and future health needs, and evidence as to which quality services are needed in a timely and efficient basis to address these needs. One in a series of profiles created to assist Alberta's 40 primary care networks with primary health care planning by providing a broad range of demographic, socio-economic and population health statistics considered relevant to primary health care for communities across the province.

Description

Stormwater ponds are artificial structures that are critical components of stormwater management systems in many Canadian cities. They serve to prevent flooding of urban areas during excess rainfall. Stormwater ponds also contribute to environmental health by allowing the settlement of dirt and solids from stormwater to the bottom of the pond. As a result, the sediments of stormwater ponds can become enriched with potentially harmful contaminants. The health risks posed to anglers by contact with stormwater and sediments and consumption of fish from stormwater ponds are not well characterized. The City of Lacombe (Alberta) is a municipality with two stormwater ponds stocked with sterile fish for angling. Alberta Health collected water, sediment and fish from these two ponds over two seasons (fall 2010 and spring 2011) and analyzed the samples for a suite of contaminants. This table provides inpatient separations made by local area residents to the top three accessed non-local facilities. The data is provided for the most recent fiscal year available. The data is provided for the most recent fiscal year available. An inpatient separation from a health care facility occurs anytime a patient (or resident) leaves because of death, discharge, sign-out against medical advice or transfer. The number of separations is the most commonly used measure of the utilization of hospital services. Separations, rather than admissions, are used because hospital abstracts for inpatient care are based on information gathered at the time of discharge. This figure provides the age-standardized inpatient separation rates per 100,000 population for selected conditions. An inpatient separation from a health care facility occurs anytime a patient (or resident) leaves because of death, discharge, sign-out against medical advice or transfer. The number of separations is the most commonly used measure of the utilization of hospital services. Separations, rather than admissions, are used because hospital abstracts for inpatient care are based on information gathered at the time of discharge. The selected conditions are Asthma, Diabetes, Influenza, Ischemic Heart Diseases, Mental and Behavioural Disorders due to Psychoactive Substance Use, Pneumonia, Pulmonary Heart and Pulmonary Circulation Diseases.
