Description

To address challenges resulting from the rapid pace of oil sands development, and to anticipate the impacts of continuing growth, the Oil Sands Ministerial Strategy Committee of the provincial government was directed by Cabinet in 2006 to develop a coordinated short-term action plan to address the social, environmental and economic impacts of oil sands development in local communities. This report is designed to support that initiative and to provide a foundation of facts and information about oil sands developments.

The Royal Commission on the Development of Northern Alberta was established to study the conditions and particular requirements of the northern areas of Alberta in relation to their present and potential development, to assist the economic development of the area. The first meeting of the Commission was held in July 1957 and it released its report in March of the following year. The report includes a set of recommendations under the headings of agriculture, forestry, surveys, transportation, communication, water resources, and general recommendations.

In June 2007, Premier Stelmach initiated a comprehensive project to develop an integrated growth management plan for the Capital Region. A task team was appointed to investigate growth projections for the region, core and social infrastructure needs, alternative approaches to governance, and potential models for sharing in the costs of regional projects. This report provides the findings and recommendations of the project team, and includes a comprehensive framework for a regional growth management plan identifying growth projections, current plans, projected needs and gaps in land use, core infrastructure and social infrastructure. It also includes: an identification of key issues to be addressed by the provincial government; a governance model that outlines the nature and make up of a new regional board, its functions and services, and how decisions should be made; estimates of the costs and benefits of a regional approach and suggested models for sharing in the costs of regional...
