Twin Valley Reservoir was first filled in 2003 following construction of a new dam on the Little Bow River near its confluence with Mosquito Creek. To fill and operate the new reservoir, increased diversion from the Highwood River to Women’s Coulee and to the Little Bow River occurs in spring according to an approved water management plan. An existing lake, Clear Lake, was also stabilized by diversion from Mosquito Creek near the mouth first operated in 2002, and additional enhancements. This report presents an evaluation and statistical analysis of water quality in Twin Valley Reservoir, Clear Lake, and their tributaries that was prepared using intensive monitoring data collected by Alberta Environment from 1999 to 2010, with reference to previous baseline sampling where needed for statistical testing.

The objectives of the study were to: 1) review AEW provincial water quality database and select lakes with long-term data suitable for statistical trend analysis; 2) provide and overview of water quality conditions and long-term trends in lakes; and 3) investigate the influences of water management and lake level on water quality.

The proposal is for production of 80,000 barrels per day (bbls/d) of crude bitumen using steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) technology. The location is within Lac La Biche County, approximately 50 kilometers northwest of the Hamlet of Wandering River. The EIA was deemed complete in 2014. Long term soil acidification monitoring was initiated by Alberta Environment in 1981 to track potential effects of acidic atmospheric deposition on soils in Alberta. Two sites per year were established for a total of eight sites, with baseline sampling completed in 1984. The sites were established each fall at eight locations in the province, as follows: Fort McMurray, Cold Lake, High Prairie, Bruderheim, Devon, Rocky Mountain House, Esther and Twin Butte. In 2008, a ninth site was added in the Fort Saskatchewan Industrial Heartland area in order to provide a better assessment of acidification impacts from major industrial development and oil sands bitumen upgraders proposed for a region. This report presents the data and statistical analysis of six or seven monitoring events up to 2010.

Alberta Environment has identified water quality in the North Saskatchewan River (NSR) as a major issue to be addressed in the North Saskatchewan Regional Plan (NSRP). Knowledge of the source, transport and fate of sediment-associated contaminants in this watershed is fundamental to understanding and managing anthropogenic impacts on water quality and source assessment study conducted for Alberta Environment and Water to provide information regarding the following two research questions: 1) What are the physical, geochemical and contaminant characteristics of sediment in the NSR and is tributaries, and 2) What are the key spatial sources in sediment in the NSR?

The purpose of this study was to conduct a groundwater evaluation for a sub-region of the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan. The area of interest included the area south of the Oldman River and west of the Belly River within the Municipal District of Willow Creek No. 26. The main population centre in the area is the Town of Fort Macleod. The evaluation was done by collecting readily available data relating to the groundwater evaluation; it did not include any field work and no new data was generated.

The document was developed with the intention of providing leading practices to help operators optimize the use of available reclamation materials on a site-specific basis. The best management practices (BMPs) contained in the document are provided as background to aid operators with current and planned reclamation activities to enable continuous improvement. BMPs provide a reasonable level of guidance on practice for activities representing moderate risk and are based on imperfect knowledge. When using this document it is important to think about interactions between individual BMPs, as well as the BMPs and external factors.
