Description

Leaf and yard waste represents a significant component of the municipal solid waste stream generated annually in Alberta. At the time of this report, about 25 per cent of this leaf and yard waste collected as part of the municipal solid waste stream is composted and the remainder landfilled. Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development's Leaf and Yard Waste Diversion Strategy recommends policy tools and options to divert leaf and yard waste away to beneficial use, such as composting. This report evaluates the benefits and costs of leaf and yard waste composting that result from the recommended diversion rates. These benefits and costs are then compared to landfill disposal of leaf and yard waste.

Description

In 2009, the Project Team, consisting of personnel from CH2M HILL, R.Alexander Associates, sonnevera international corp., and the University of Alberta, was retained to research and compile background information needed to finalize the L&YW Diversion Strategy. As part of this assignment, the Project Team was also asked to review the program recommendations put forward by L&YW Diversion Technical Committee. During the course of the project, a number of technical memoranda were prepared that focused on specific information requirements identified by the L&YW Technical Committee. These reports were subsequently updated based on additional information and comments provided by the Committee, and have been consolidated into this summary report.
