Special licences are used in situations where a species (e.g, Elk) could not withstand the hunting pressure of a general season, or where they are need to meet a specific management goal (e.g., the goal in the antlered mule deer draw areas is to develop and maintain a more balanced age structure in the herd). A special licence allows a hunter to hunt the type of big game animal (e.g., antlerless elk) in the area (a WMU, a group of WMUs, or a portion of one or more WMUs) specified on the licence. This dataset displays the special licence boundaries for both residents and/or non-residents for the following species type: Antlered and Antlerless Elk, Antlered and Antlerless White-tailed Deer, Antlered and Antlerless Mule Deer, Antlered and Antlerless Moose, Calf Moose, Mountain Goat, Non-trophy and Trophy Sheep, Non-Trophy and Trophy Antelope, and Merriam's Turkey. Aerial surveys of the Eastern Slopes of Alberta for bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) abundance, composition and location have been conducted since 1972. Since 1978, surveys have focused on “selected” winter ranges, where concentrations of bighorn sheep had been identified during previous flights. This report summarizes observations of bighorn sheep obtained during an aerial survey of selected winter ranges on January 30, 31 and February 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 17 2016. The objective of the survey was to document the abundance and composition of bighorn sheep in Cadomin and Willmore census zones. A ground survey of the adjacent Luscar & Gregg River Coal Mine census zone was conducted by mine operators.
