Description

This report presents the methods used to generate the web-based Condition on Environment (CoE) content published for chloride (Cl-) concentrations in the surface water of major rivers and their tributaries across Alberta. Accordingly, this report helps fulfill the responsibility of reporting to the public on the condition of Alberta's ambient environment, as required by the province's Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act. In particular, this report outlines the steps taken to obtain and prepare the data, assess the quality of the data and conduct spatial and temporal analyses of Cl-. The goal of this report is to neither investigate nor summarize potential Cl- sources, but rather to summarize spatial and temporal trend of Cl- concentrations in the surface waters of Alberta's major rivers and tributaries.

Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) is continuing with an environmental monitoring program in an area north of the former Canada Creosote Site and the Bow River in northwest Calgary, referred to as the North Bow Site. Advisian was awarded a five-year (2017-2021) contract to complete the North Bow Site environmental monitoring work. The agreement allows the Province of Alberta to set elevations on the Ghost Reservoir during the period of May 16 to July 7, which is typically the highest storm risk period of the year. By keeping the reservoir lower during this period there is more space to store flood events thereby lowering peak flows downstream of the dam or, at the very least, delaying those peaks.
