The stewardship of Alberta's resources requires informed decision-making at local, regional, and provincial scales based on the best available knowledge from multiple knowledge systems. In the interest of advancing Indigenous community-based monitoring (ICBM) in Alberta, interviews were conducted with participants from 51 First Nations and Métis organizations across Alberta. The resulting report provides a snapshot of the ICBM landscape in Alberta, related to needs, interests and readiness to engage in community-based monitoring from the lens of First Nations and Métis organizations between 2015 and 2018.

This georeferenced map shows the boundaries of the Wabasca Bison Protection Area in northern Alberta. Wood bison located within specified Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) are listed as Threatened under the Wildlife Act and Regulation, including the Wabasca population. The Wabasca Bison Protection Area provides additional protection from all hunting (by both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people) to avoid extirpation of this small population of wood bison. This map can be viewed with a standard PDF viewer, but contains additional interactive enhancements that can only be accessed through specific reader apps. This georeferenced map shows the boundaries of the Northwest Bison Protection Area in northern Alberta. Wood bison located within specified Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) are listed as Threatened under the Wildlife Act and Regulation, including the Hay-Zama and Etthithun Lake populations. In order to support the conservation, management and recovery of disease-free bison in northern Alberta, all hunting of wood bison within Northwest Bison Protection Area is regulated and based on issuance of a bison special licence and allocation processes for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous persons.
