Description

Dam safety regulatory requirements are established based on the consequence classification of the structures and/or risks or hazards posed by the structures. Dam safety uses five consequence classifications for dams or canals based on the potential downstream consequences of a failure. The classifications are similar to those suggested by the Canadian Dam Association. The factors at risk that influence the consequence classification include downstream populations, the environment, the economy, cultural values and downstream infrastructure.

Environmental assessment registry documents pertaining to the proposed Coalspur Mines (Operations) Ltd. Vista Coal Mine Project Phase II. Coalspur is proposing an expansion of their approved Vista Coal Mine. The expansion would be a westward continuation of the existing mine and be an open pit surface coal mine to recover the same seams and using the same methods as the existing mine. The expansion would use existing infrastructure such as: coal processing facilities (including refuse production facilities), primary access roads and a coal loadout facility. The coal mined from the combined operation would be transported by rail to west coast ports, then shipped via ocean vessels to foreign markets. Coalspur would operate the mine as one complex with potential to increase annual production from 10 to 15Mt (million clean tons) on average. This information sheet describes the roles, responsibilities and regulatory expectations of the parties involved in the handling and disposing of hydrovac waste. Hydro excavation (hydrovac) involves using a combination of high-pressure water and vacuum technology to excavate soil, and is typically used to locate and expose existing underground infrastructure or for the installation of new underground infrastructure. Hydrovac waste is the slurry waste created in the sub-surface soil excavation process.

The purpose of this document is to provide wildlife information to applicants who are applying to conduct activities under the Water Act, such as bank stabilization, water withdrawal, work on outfall structures, and maintenance or construction of infrastructure. Water and the area surrounding water, including vegetation, are typically high quality habitat for wildlife because it provides shelter, food, clean water to drink as well as breeding grounds, migration pathways and hibernation sites. Due to the tendency for wildlife to congregate near water sources, there is potential for activities proposed under the Water Act to impact wildlife.
