Description

Alberta Environment and Protected Areas and the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI) jointly developed a Landscape Connectivity indicator for the province of Alberta. An Equivalent Connected Area index was selected to measure landscape connectivity and assess changes in connectivity over time. The indicator accounts for three broad land cover types: Upland Forest, Lowland Forest and Grass-Shrub. Landscape connectivity for the three land cover types, and an aggregated value, were calculated for all Hydrological Unit Code 8 (HUC 8) watersheds in Alberta for 2010, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 using four GIS layers: the Human Footprint Inventories created and maintained by the ABMI through the Alberta Human Footprint Monitoring Program, the Wall-to-Wall Vegetation Layer Including “Backfilled” Vegetation created and maintained by the ABMI. the wildlife crossing locations in National Parks provided by Parks Canada, and the Hierarchical Watershed Boundaries of Alberta created and...

Description

The Historical Municipal Landfills dataset is a spatial representation of the locations of historic landfills in the province of Alberta. The data was originally captured in a 1982 survey conducted by MacLaren Plansearch Lavalin where counties within Alberta were asked to identify the quarter section that landfills were located in. MacLaren ranked the results of the survey categorizing landfill locations based on their potential risk for environmental and human health impacts. In 1985 Associated Engineering did an evaluation of a selection of sites which MacLaren had ranked as having the greatest potential risk and identified them on hardcopy aerial photographs. A subset of the remaining landfills in the MacLaren report were located on historic aerial photographs as part of an Alberta Environment and Protected Areas project where the footprint of the landfill was digitized. Description

This project generated unique numerical codes at the pixel level to provide wall-to-wall coverage of 128 unique Catchment Structural Units (CSUs) codes based on land use-land cover (LULC), surficial geology, wetlands and slope across the Province. The Provincial CSU layer represents the quantification of combined structural influences at an individual pixel scale, as expressed by a specific numeric and text code. These codes reflect the geospatial layers used to represent catchment structure. The CSU data is presented at a pixel resolution of 20 x 20 m and five initial structural layers (i.e., land cover, land use, surficial geology, wetlands and slope). This resolution was chosen to balance detail with computational efficiency. Each class within the structural layers were assigned unique numeric codes of different orders of magnitude.

Description

The objective of this project was to map and characterize abandoned padded wellsites (i.e., constructed with imported mineral soil materials between 1940 and 2020) in peatlands within the Boreal and Foothills Regions of the Green area in Alberta. This Project used high-resolution LiDAR data combined with open-access optical data from Sentinel-2 to build a supervised machine learning model that detected padded sites. The classification procedure achieved 81.2% accuracy when predicting no pad and 73.9% accuracy when predicting a pad, for an overall classification accuracy of 78%. As a result, a total of 7,077 padded sites and 8,006 unpadded sites in peatland areas were obtained from the supervised classification. This dataset contains the locations of those 7,077 padded sites. These sites will be used by the Project team to select sites for a field-based research program and will be provided to EPA to enable improved regulatory efficiency in the Province of Alberta.
