Description

This report provides updated information on the conservation status of Porsild's bryum in Alberta, including targeted search efforts, subpopulation size estimates and potential threats to the species, and will be used to inform the provincial recovery planning process for the species. Two new subpopulations and two new subpopulation components are reported on for the first time here. Although the total colony number remains relatively unchanged, estimates for individual subpopulations have increased, decreased or appear to have remained relatively stable over time. Threats to the subpopulations are discussed.

The Project consists of an oil sand mine and associated activities as an extension of the Base Plant operation near Fort McMurray, Alberta. The Project includes an open pit mining operation supplying oil sands to new bitumen froth production facilities (primary extraction). Bitumen froth would be delivered by pipeline to Base Plant for further processing, including secondary extraction and upgrading into various product blends for market. Further integration between the Project and Base Plant includes utilities and water systems. There would be external and in-pit tailings areas on the Project footprint. These facilities would be constructed with a combination of overburden and coarse tailings deposits. These areas, which provide off-stream storage of water that is recycled, would be the final location for coarse tailings deposits and treated fluid tailings deposits. The...

A May 2017 report by the Bow River Working Group provided advice on new reservoir storage on the Bow River upstream of Calgary to reduce flood and drought risk, and identified three reservoir options that warranted further study. From November 2018 to spring 2020, the Alberta government completed a conceptual assessment of the 3 water storage options. This package contains the conceptual assessment’s final report and its appendices.

The proposal is for in situ extraction with an estimated total bitumen production of 160,000 bpd and an operational life of up to 40 years. The project would be developed in four phases, supported by cogeneration of electricity to be constructed within the first two phases. Project components include gas fired steam generation including some cogeneration, water treatment and recycling, bitumen treatment, multi-well production pads, steam delivery pipelines, product recovery pipelines, local access roads, and borrow pits.
