Description

Designated Industrial Zones in Alberta are areas targeted for strategic investment and development of clustered industrial development and economic diversification. Management goals for Designated Industrial Zones include regulatory streamlining, cluster infrastructure development, and the minimization of cumulative effects on the environment. This document summarizes how non-methane hydrocarbons will be monitored to evaluate whether environmental outcomes for air quality are being met in the designated industrial zone.

Albertans had limited activities that could promote transmission of the COVID-19 virus during the spring 2020 public health emergency. As a result, vehicle traffic had decreased. In urban areas, emissions from vehicles contribute to nitrogen dioxide concentrations in the air. Nitrogen dioxide is an indicator of air quality that affects respiratory health and can react in the atmosphere to form secondary pollutants such as ozone and fine particulate matter. Between March 16 and April 24, 2020, following the public health emergency, concentrations of nitrogen dioxide in the air in Alberta’s largest cities, Calgary and Edmonton, were at least 14 per cent lower than in previous years.

Presents an analysis and comparison of the ambient air quality prior to, during and after the Horse River Wildfire (Fort McMurray) in 2016. The discussed common air pollutants are fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ammonia (NH3), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and carbon monoxide (CO). The focus of the work is to understand the impacts of the Horse River Wildfire on ambient air quality within Fort McMurray and surrounding areas. In addition, the report also provides recommendations for future air monitoring activities during wildfire events.

It is not the intent of the Department to exclude analyzers with operating principles and/or equivalent performance specifications different than those provided. Written authorization from the regulator must be received prior to the purchase, installation and/or use of any analyzer based on an alternative principle of operation or differing performance specifications from those herein.
