Description

This wildlife status report looks at the red-tailed chipmunk, a small rodents that are found in the montane and subalpine regions of Waterton Lakes National Park and the West Castle Valley. There are two recognized subspecies of red-tailed chipmunks and southwestern Alberta is the northern range limit of one of these subspecies. Populations of both subspecies are probably secure on a continental basis, but they may be vulnerable to declines in the northern portions of their ranges. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

Once common throughout the short and mixed-grass prairie regions of North America, in Canada the species disappeared from historic ranges in the early 20th century and has been listed as "extirpated" since 1978. Reintroduction efforts have resulted in the establishment of small populations in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan and the species is current listed as Endangered in Alberta. Historically, wolverines were found throughout the province, but its recent range extends north of a line between Cold Lake and Edson, and along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains. The wolverine has been included on the list of species that may be at risk in Alberta. This wildlife status report looks at the Ord's kangaroo rat, a medium-sized, nocturnal rodent adapted for survival in arid environments. The species is widespread in western North America, but reaches the northern edge of its range in southeastern Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan. There, it inhabits sparsely-vegetated habitats with loose, sandy soils. These habitats are uncommon and fragmented within the Canadian range. The Ord's kangaroo rat is included on the list of species which may be at risk in Alberta because of their localized distribution and specific habitat requirements.
