Description

Alberta Envrionmental Protection has intensively monitored the Bow River ecosystem since 1989. This work was designed to determine the distribution of contaminants from the Canada Creosote site in the aquatic ecosystem, to protect domestic water supplies and to ensure the human consumption of fish was safe. This report evaluates changes in water quality over the two years since the containment system was intalled.

Lesser Slave Lake is the third largest lake in Alberta and supports important fisheries, provincial parks, recreation areas, water supplies, and other uses. The lake has been well investigated with respect to fisheries but a comprehensive water quality or limnological survey has not been carried out on it previously. To document existing water quality of the lake and its major inflows, particularly with regard to nutrient and algal conditions, a water quality survey was conducted in the 1991-93 period. The two main basins of the lake, five tributaries, and the lake=s outflow were sampled monthly during the ice-free season, and additional sampling was done on the inflow and outflow of Buffalo Bay.

AEP last revised its standards and guidelines for municipal watenA/orks, wastewater and storm drainage systems in 1988. Early in 1995, the Department commenced a comprehensive stakeholder driven process to review and revise the 1988 standards and guidelines. The purpose of this publication is to provide comprehensive and scientifically defensible standards and guidelines that are effective, reliable, achievable and economically affordable. The owners and/or their engineering consultants are responsible for the detailed project design and satisfactory construction and operation of safe and reliable systems.

Presents the results of a study by Alberta Environmental Protection of water quality in Lac La Biche in response to complaints in the spring of 1992 about the taste and odour in the water supply for the Town of Lac La Biche. In particular, lake bottom sediments in the area of the intake and elsewhere were sampled to determine whether excessive organic material in the sediments was contributing to water quality problems in the water supply and whether water quality might be improved by relocating the intake.

The purpose of the Lesser Slave Lake regulation report is to provide information to the area residents on the background leading to the regulation of water levels and on the effects this regulation has on the Lesser Slave Lake water levels. Impacts of the regulated water levels on agriculture, recreation, fisheries and municipal water supply are presented. The analyses are based on simulated water levels from 1916 to 1992 with the regulation project being in place and are compared to the water levels which existed under the natural lake outlet conditions.

The specific objectives of this survey were to 1) assess the effects of existing development on water quality on the Elbow River upstream of Calgary; 2) examine phosphorus loading patterns and determine major sources; and 3) provide baseline data to assess the effects of future development.
