This study reports a floristic and landscape survey of Ft. Assiniboine Sandhills Wildland Park. The park spans about 6,600 ha and is located along the north side of the Athabasca River northeast of the hamlet of Ft. Assiniboine. Thirty person-days of fieldwork were conducted in June and August 1997; 48 0.03 ha plots were established and described; miscellaneous observations were made outside the plots. A total of 434 species of plants were found in the study area, of which 20 species (4.59%) are classified as provincially rare. Of the 20 rare species, 6 were vascular plants, 7 were mosses, and 7 were lichens. By taxonomic group, there were 258 vascular taxa, 90 mosses, 14 hepatics, and 74 lichens. The typical 0.03 ha plot contained 50.2 species (s.d. 18.9, median 49.5), with a maximum of 97 species and a minimum of 9 species/plot. SOD was sampled in the Athabasca River from October 1994 to March 1995 with objectives of obtaining a series of measurements from upstream of Hinton to the Calling River area, and investigation temporal change in SOD at key sites.

Description

This report presents the findings of water quality monitoring and surveys on the Athabasca River system by Alberta Environmental Protection in the years 1990 to 1993. Water quality has been monitored by means of longitudinal synoptic surveys, recording meters, and a network of regular sampling sites. The effects of effluents are quantified and evaluated with reference to the Alberta Ambient Surface Water Quality Interim Guidelines and the Canadian Water Quality Guidelines. The results of this set of surveys are compared with previous winter water quality surveys from 1988 and 1989.

This study delineates flood hazard areas and determines design flood levels for Athabasca River and Happy, Hardisty and Maskuta Creeks through Hinton. The study area includes an almost 10 km reach of the Athabasca River, an almost 4 km reach of Hardisty Creek and less than 1 km reaches of both Happy and Maskuta Creeks. The design discharge for the Athabasca River is 1390 m³/s. The design discharges for Happy, Hardisty and Maskuta Creeks are 33.2 m³/s, 10.6 m³/s and 134 m³/s respectively. The study was prepared in May 1994. Flood information available after study completion may not be reflected in the current flood hazard study report or flood hazard mapping.

The purpose of the Athabasca Sandhills Local Integrated Resource Plan is to provide direction for managing and using public land and resources in the planning area to provide a variety of benefits for Albertans. A resource is defined as anything perceived by society as having value, including such traditional resources as land, timber and minerals as well as less tangible resources without an obvious market value, such as unique ecosystems and recreational opportunities. Generally the plan maximizes benefits by specifying where, when and how resources will be managed and used.
