In Canada, any pesticide must be approved for use by the federal government. Pesticides are classified for use as restricted, commercial or domestic. To determine if a pesticide is registered for use in Canada, look for the pest control products act registration number on the label. If there is no PCPA number on the label, then the product must not be used.

Alberta Environment undertook the collection, consolidation and analysis of pesticide sales data from pesticide vendors in Alberta in 2008. The objective was to document the volume and types of pesticides sold in Alberta, and to prepare a general overview of the sales data in relation to sectors of use, types of use, chemical groupings, detailed active ingredient sales, as well as geographic breakdowns by river basin, natural region, land use framework region and rural municipality. This project is part of an ongoing pesticide sales survey that reports on provincial pesticide sales every 5 years.

There are approximately 100 permanent pesticide container collection sites located throughout the province to collect empty and rinsed non-returnable plastic and metal pesticide containers. The sites are not to be used for the disposal of pesticide concentrate or other refuse. Empty bags that contained granular pesticides contaminated cardboard packaging or plastic liners should be disposed at a Class II landfill. Clean cardboard boxes and container booklets should be recycled.

Some commercial and restricted class pesticides such as insect repellents, insecticides for use directly on livestock and rodent bait are classified as Schedule 4 and do not require vendor registration.

In 2003, a total of 9 264 487.7 kg of pesticide active ingredient (ai) was sold in, or shipped into, Alberta. Pesticides sold into the Agriculture sector accounted for 96.2% of all pesticides sold, with the Commercial/Industrial sector accounting for 3.1% of sales, and the Domestic sector accounting for 0.6% of sales. The types of pesticides sold were predominantly herbicides, at 77.3%. Adjuvants and surfactants made up the next largest category at 14.6%. Insecticides made up 4.7% of sales, while fungicides made up 3.4% of sales.
