Description

Alberta Environment conducted a mobile air quality monitoring survey near livestock feeding operations in the Lethbridge area from September 1998 to July 1999, in response to concerns voiced by local residents about odours from livestock feeding operations as well as a proposal for a hog processing plant in the Lethbridge area. Following the public release of the Alberta Environment report and a critique by the Chinook Health Region, a request was made by Alberta Environment for this independent review of the Alberta Environment study and the Chinook Health Region critique.

Residents of the Calder neigbourhood in Edmonton had concerns with diesel fume impacts on the air quality in the area resulting from a Canadian National rail yard located just south of the neighbourhood. Alberta Environment conducted mobile air monitoring surveys in the winter and summer of 2004 and the winter of 2005. In general, pollutant concentrations in the neighbourhood were not significantly different from concentrations measured at the comparison stations outside the Calder neighbourhood.

Description

Due to complaints received into Alberta Environment, air quality was monitored in the vicinity of Mirror rail yard in the spring of 2010 and winter of 2010/2011 to assess the impact of emissions from idling diesel engines within the rail yard. Analysis results from a limited number of samples collected during the spring indicated that areas downwind of the rail yard may be impacted by emissions other than idling at the yard. To further investigate the impact of activities within the yard on nearby air quality a winter sampling campaign was conducted.

This interim report had identified the presence of a variety of hydrocarbons in the Three Creeks area. At times, these hydrocarbons were detected in elevated concentrations. No Alberta Ambient Air Quality Objectives were exceeded for any of the samples that had the appropriate sampling intervals.

All monitoring sites were downwind of the CNRL natural gas well blowout, except Site G which was a background site. A one-hour AAAQO for hydrogen sulphide of 0.010 ppm was no exceeded. The maximum one-hour average for hydrogen sulphide of 0.001 ppm was measured at both Site G, the background site, and Site H. These were the only two sites were hydrogen sulphide was above the detection limit. The highest one hour total reduced sulphur concentration of 0.002 ppm as measured at Site E.

Alberta Environment regularly conducts short term air quality surveys as part of its air quality monitoring program. These surveys are typically conducted in areas with no permanent monitoring stations or may be done to supplement existing monitoring. For the current survey the department's mobile air monitoring laboratory was used. the MAML is equipped to measure a suite of pollutants commonly associated with industrial and urban emissions.

Odour complaints from the Three Creeks area were received by the Energy Resources Conservation Board and Alberta Environment. Odours were noted when the wind speed was low, and it is likely that this meteorological condition contributed to the accumulation of emitted compounds in the area. The odours in the area were identified as "hydrocarbon type" and air samples were collected at various locations within the affected area, at the potential source locations, and also at background (reference) sites. These samples were taken to a laboratory and analyzed for volatile organic compounds (also known as hydrocarbons).

The report also provides information on air quality planning alignment mechanisms, which will be useful in delineation of air zones in Alberta under the Canadian Council of Ministers of Environment's Air Quality Management System, and in alignment of Alberta airsheds and land-use regions in the Alberta Land-use Framework.

Description

The wood waste burner operated by Tolko forest Products is located within the town limits of High Level. The current study investigates the quality of air in the area with a special focus on particulate matter. Although a wide size range of particles can be emitted by wood burning, the current study focused on concentrations of fine particulate matter. The concentration of particulate matter was monitored at one location for five and a half months, beginning in October 2008. In addition, the department's mobile laboratory was used to monitor a suite of gases and particles at various sites in and near the town. This was performed on two days at the start of the study.

A short monitoring survey was conducted in the Bonanza area, northwest of Grande Prairie near the British Columbia border, to evaluate the quality of air. Landowners are concerned about the impact of oil and gas activity on air quality in the area. As a result, this report focuses on pollutants typically associated with such activities. The survey was conducted using Alberta Environment's Mobile Air Quality Monitoring Laboratory. Samples were collected on two days in February 2009.
