Description

A ten day field campaign was carried out on North Saskatchewan River to study the physical mixing with the ambient river water of effluent from the Goldbar Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), Capital Region WWTP and Agrium Redwater operations. In this report we present rhodamine concentrations, depth averaged water velocities, and flow depths across surveyed sections in reaches downstream of each plant. The objectives of the study were twofold. The primary objective was to determine the downstream distance required to achieve full mixing of the effluent. Full mixing was defined as the location where tracer concentration was uniform across the section. The second objective was to measure spatially distributed tracer concentration and water velocity in the mixing zone, such that dispersion patterns could be determined.

Description

Alberta Environment (AENV) collected sediment, benthic invertebrate and epilithic algal samples from 25 river water-quality monitoring sites on the NSR in the fall of 2007 and 2008. Several sites were sampled on both the left and right banks (facing downstream). Sediments from depositional areas were analyzed for a wide range of contaminants, including nutrients, metals and trace organic contaminants (e.g., extractable priority pollutants, PAHs, PCBs, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, personal care products and flame retardants). Benthic invertebrates were sampled from both erosional (Neill cylinders) and depositional (kick samples) areas; invertebrates were enumerated and identified. Epilithic algal communities were sampled from erosional areas, and were analyzed for chlorophyll-a content, as well as taxonomically.

This report documents the configuration, calibration and validation of the river water quality model for the mainstem of the NSR from Devon to the Alberta-Saskatchewan Border. The model represents hydrodynamics, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, organic carbon, nutrients, algal interactions and other parameters influenced by tributaries, municipal wastewater treatment plants, industrial facilities, combined with sewer overflows and storm water. The model calibration period was from January 2000 through March 2008.

This study delineates flood hazard areas and determines design flood levels along the North Saskatchewan River through Devon and Fort Saskatchewan. The study area includes about 17 km of river in the Devon reach and about 18 km of river in the Fort Saskatchewan reach. The design discharge for the North Saskatchewan River is 5270 m³/s. The study was prepared in February 2007. Flood information available after study completion may not be reflected in the current flood hazard study report or flood hazard mapping.

Description

Over the past thirty to fifty years, major rivers throughout the province of Alberta have been undergoing regular monthly sampling for a wide range of water quality parameters. Known as the Long-Term River Network (LTRN), this monitoring initiative has resulted in an extensive database of water quality information for the Province. Due to the broad time span and continuity of these data, they lend themselves particularly well to statistical trend assessment – a very useful way of examining changes in the health of a water body over time. Often indicative of human activities in the basin, trends in water quality parameters can be analysed for a variety of purposes, including the evaluation of human impacts on water quality, the development and assessment of watershed management initiatives, and the prediction of future conditions. The purpose of this report was to assess water quality conditions and trends in the North Saskatchewan River from 1977 to the end of 2002.

This study determines flood magnitudes for the North Saskatchewan River at Edmonton. Both natural and regulated annual maximum flood flows are examined in the assessment of the frequency of occurrence of future flood peak flow rates. Recorded flows and water levels within the North Saskatchewan River basin above Edmonton form the basis of the analyses. Several frequency distributions were applied to the annual flood discharge data and the most applicable distribution was selected. The results of the analyses reflect the most current information and methodologies available to determine flood frequency estimates.

The objective of this report is to present historical information and data concerning the floods int he North Saskatchewan River Basin. It is the intent to provide in one report the most salient flood data and information which may be available in any of the several existing publications. There are currently about sixty hydrometric stations active in the North Saskatchewan River Basin. This report presents data for eighteen selected hydrometric stations. Streamflow data have been collected for the North Saskatchewan River for approximately seventy years and there are several publications which give the recorded flood data in various forms.
