The results of the survey will help determine how to best engage well owners in taking responsibility for proper well management. Approximately 400,000 to 450,000 Albertans rely upon privately-owned water wells for household needs.

These requirements are supplementary to the Standard for Water-Well Testing for Coalbed Methane/Natural Gas in Coal Operations and as such contribute to the Standard’s commitment to continue protection of provincial groundwater resources and Albertans’ groundwater supplies through responsible coalbed methane development. The requirements provide consistent protocols for testing, sampling and analyzing groundwater from water wells that were pre-/post-tested as part of the Baseline Water Well Testing Program.
