Description

The work presented herein comprises a phase 1 study to provide an assessment of the current state of knowledge regarding the nature of sediment inputs, transport and contaminant relationships in rivers with the intention of using this review to outline a scope and methodology to address key knowledge gaps. Such information is necessary to develop strategic and cost-effective monitoring programs for management of the North Saskatchewan watershed. Specific objectives of this study are to review and compile current knowledge regarding: 1) the nature, source, transport and fate of cohesive sediment and associated contaminants in rivers; 2) the effect of land-use change on the source and fate of sediment-associated contaminants; 3) as assessment of frameworks and methodologies used to evaluate the provenance and fate of sediments in river environments and; 4) make recommendations for future work to evaluate the provenance, transport, fate and effect of cohesive sediment on the NSR.

In 2008, Alberta Environment adopted a management framework for the Muskeg River watershed. The management framework defines criteria for evaluation of water quantity and water quality in the Muskeg River watershed. Observed conditions are compared against scientifically established limits that have been developed specifically for the Muskeg River Watershed. These limits are based on data collected within the watershed, as well as more broad information on streamflow, water quality and requirements of the aquatic ecosystem. One of the key recommendations of the management framework was the development of an integrated monitoring program for the Muskeg River watershed to coordinate offlease monitoring activities that are currently conducted by individual companies and Alberta Environment. The proposed project is to be located within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, approximately 15 km southeast of Conklin, Alberta. The EIA was deemed complete in 2010. Description

Due to complaints received into Alberta Environment, air quality was monitored in the vicinity of Mirror rail yard in the spring of 2010 and winter of 2010/2011 to assess the impact of emissions from idling diesel engines within the rail yard. Analysis results from a limited number of samples collected during the spring indicated that areas downwind of the rail yard may be impacted by emissions other than idling at the yard. To further investigate the impact of activities within the yard on nearby air quality a winter sampling campaign was conducted.

The purpose of the guide is to clearly define the reporting requirements and simplify the review process. It provides a checklist for annual conservation and reclamation report content and submission requirements. This guide replaces the Guide to the Preparation of Applications and Reports for Coal & Oil Sands Operations, Alberta Environment, 1991.
