Air quality monitoring northwest of the town of Brooks was initiated by concerns of fugitive emissions from feedlots, wastewater treatment lagoons and irrigation operations in the area. The largest of these facilities is Lakeside Farm Industry (which includes Lakeside feedlot). As an integrated agribusiness, Lakeside Farm Industry is involved in feeding, slaughtering, processing cattle, farming and irrigating land for silage. Previous surveys in the area showed that the highest ammonia, hydrogen sulphide, hydrocarbons and particulate matter concentrations were measured downwind of Lakeside feedlot.

Alberta Environment's mobile laboratory and two stationary particulate matter monitors were used to conduct an air quality survey to examine the influence of emissions from the Mitsue industrial park and from community-based activities on the air quality in the town of Slave Lake, in particular the influence of pollutants present in wood-smoke. Mitsue industrial park contains four wood processing facilities that burn waste wood; in addition wood is used in the area for residential heating.

The purpose of this report was to provide both a general summary of water quality conditions in the Oldman River and to subject the extensive long-term dataset to a thorough series of trend assessments. Although monitoring on the Oldman River has frequently addressed a host of trace organic contaminants, including pesticides, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and numerous other compounds, most of these data are insufficient for statistical evaluation of trends. Hence, analysed data are largely restricted to conventional water quality variables, including such things as ions, nutrients, bacteria, and metals. Results of trend assessment on these data suggest that a number of variables have undergone significant changes over the years. Despite ongoing expansion of livestock operations, irrigation activities, and human population in the Oldman River basin, all but one significant trend detected at the two sites after 1987 are decreasing and largely indicative of improving water...

Description

As part of its air quality monitoring program, Alberta Environment conducts unannounced air quality surveys through out the province. Such a survey was conducted in the area of Tolko industries for two days in December of 2005 and two days in March of 2006. Tolko industries, located west of High Prairie, produce Oriented Strand Board (OSB) panels. OSB panels are produced from wood strands, flakes and wafers that are bonded using a synthetic resin. The process involves high temperature and pressure, during which pollutants may be released into the atmosphere; this would occur in addition to any fugitive emissions from the facility. The objectives of this study included the quantification of selected pollutants in the proximity of Tolko Industries and comparison of measured concentrations to Alberta’s ambient air quality objectives.

A number of odour complaints had been filed with the Natural Resources Conservation Board (NRCB), the Municipal District of Smoky River No. 130, the Peace Health Region and Alberta Environment regarding confined feeding operations south of Girouxville. Alberta Environment conducted air quality surveys in the fall of 2004, the spring of 2005 and the spring of 2006. The NRCB who regulate confined livestock operations will use the data for their regulatory purposes and Peace Country Health will determine whether there are health related issues resulting from the data.
