Description

Alberta’s ambient air quality objectives and guidelines are developed to protect Alberta’s air quality. They are intended to provide protection of the environment and human health to an extent technically and economically feasible, as well as socially and politically acceptable. This document provides objective levels for hydrogen fluoride, as well as a short description of the substance and the effects of exposure to hydrogen fluoride on humans, other animals, and vegetation.

Soil contamination may also become a source of contamination for groundwater, surface water and air. Remediation costs often increase sharply when soil contamination spreads to other media. This directive establishes the regulatory requirements and professional guidance which are needed to ensure that the soil resource and associated environmental media are protected at industrial sites.

Description

Alberta Environment has completed five annual assessments of particulate matter (PM) and ozone data as promised under the Clean Air Strategic Alliance (CASA) Particulate Matter and Ozone Management Framework. These assessments compare outdoor levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone data to action triggers defined by the CASA Framework. Action levels have been assigned to the Edmonton and Calgary Census Metropolitan Areas and individual air monitoring stations in Alberta based on the procedure defined by the Canada Wide Standards (CWS) for particulate matter and ozone and the CASA Framework.

Description

Since the early 1950s, large rivers throughout the Province of Alberta have been subjected to regular monthly sampling for a broad suite of water quality parameters. Althought water quality monitoring on the Athabasca River began as early as 1955 for some variables, regular sampling for most parameters was not implemented until at least 1960. Initially, sampling efforts were limited to a single station at the Town of Athabasca. In 1977, a second site was established at Old Fort, 200 km downstream of Ft. McMurray. Two additional sampling stations, situated upstream of both Hinton and Fort McMurray, were added in 1999 and 2002 respectively. The purpose of this report is to provide both a general overview of water quality conditions in the Athabasca River, in the form of summary statistics and time series graphs for all four sites, and more in-depth statistical trend analyses on long-term data for the Athabasca and Old Fort monitoring stations.

The report evaluates longitudinal trends in benthic invertebrate and epilithic algal communities sampled from long-term river network sites on the Bow River in 2006. It also compares long-term trends in historical (1983-1992) and 2006 data. Responses to nutrient enrichment are clearly visible below Calgary: invertebrates and algae thrive in fast flowing (erosional) areas, but in slow flowing (depositional) areas lower diversities indicate stress. At Cochrane invertebrates and algae are impacted by strong diurnal fluctuations in river discharge resulting from hydro-electric dam operation.

A study was initiated to evaluate the concentration of fine particulate matter in Sherwood Park, east of Edmonton. The data presented in this interim report were collected between January and June 2008, at two monitoring sites. Overall, the particulate concentrations at two sites were comparable. Concentrations were generally higher during the winter months and for periods with low wind speeds. This is likely due to a larger semi-volatile fraction forming the sampled particles and/or lower mixing height during the winter months resulting in higher ground level concentrations.

The review was conducted to support the development of a new air monitoring strategic plan for Alberta, and considered factors such as existing air monitoring in Alberta and future air emission scenarios.
